My friends are trying to persuade me to join their gym, but I have basic bench and plenty of free weights at home. Want to build up ( but not to freak levels ) Is a home work out just as beneficial as going to the gym? Thanx in advance guys

A home workout can be even more beneficial than the gym! You have easy access to your weights and you don't have to wait on anyone else. You won't get distracted by the goings-on around you and you will be able to focus. However, if you need a spotter you may want to go to the gym. Also, you should have a mirror where you lift so you can check your form regularly, lest you slip into the "motions" of lifting. Either way you should be able to get a good workout. I would say if you have the equipment, screw the gym, unless you are interested in other programs they offer there.

Good luck!

The best way to go is the way in which you will stick to your routines.
To get and stay fit, to build up and sustain the build you need to work out about 3 to 4 times a week. Where are you more likely to do it?

Working out at home can be as beneficial as working out at a gym. You only have to be sure you are doing things properly. Their are many ways to do that: DVD, books, web pages, etc.

I personally prefer to work out at home. I can do it on my time, dress as I want to, no social activity (which distracts me), and I do not spend the time coming and going. But, that is a personal choice.

Do what will keep you motivated and constant.

Good luck!

no, you will maybe start using your home equipment for a few weeks, then you will slowly get lazy and unmotivated. I find it helpful to go to the gym with other people working out, and where i can move around and use equipment specifically designed to hit one body part. and if you are serious about getting in shape then get a trainer until you at least have a good workout plan

it depends if you are working hard enough. but of course you can get as good of a workout at home than the gym. just with the gym, you can do all sorts of exercises on all sorts of equipment.

Free weights are better than machines for muscle gain.
Get a training partner to encourage ya and motivate you at home. Also at home you can do it whenever you please.
Gyms are good for variety and socialising, but if it is busy you are waiting to go on machines.

Yes, but you won't get the socialization you get at the gym, and some of their facilities(like pool and the steam room), service (personal trainer, nutritionist..._)
