No...but you must understand them.

This cultural proverb comes straight out of the Christian view that the OT Law was the cause of sin. The complaint of the early christians, especially early jewish converts, was that there were so many little details to each law that it was impossible to know them all and keep them faithfully. thus, due to the details they came to sin...ie the Devil is in the details. Of course, they were mistaken in that assessment but that's a discussion for another day.

But when one examines the importance of details consider this (a true story, I know the participants): This question of details was asked to a rabbi who writes a weekly 'Ask the Rabbi' column. The questioner asked his questions many times without an apparent response or a column appearing with his question. After several months, a column appeared in which the questioner asked (paraphrasing), Dear Rabbi, I've sent you this question concerning the why we must follow all the details of the law and the detailed nature of the Law in general many times without a reply. Are you just being rude?

The response was: Dear ________, I have responded faithfully to each of your inquiries, however, each time I neglected to type the '.' between aol and com in your email address. Isn't it amazing how neglecting the smallest of details can create such problems!?

No.

It means pay EXTRA attention to the details, because that is where the 'devil' is hiding.

For example, reading the fine print and *conditions apply sections of things.

Actually, the original wording of the saying was "God is in the details." Interesting that only the "devil" variant is heard these days. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say "God is in the details."

"We think in generalities, but we live in detail." ~ Alfred North Whitehead
