The system seems wildly unfair. Personally, I think violations should be only used to prevent advertisement/spam. Maybe they could just let users tag Q/A's as "immature" rather than reporting them as violations.

What is the goofiest violation you have been accused of? What do you think should represent a violation?

I've received over 100 violations, nearly all for "Chatting and personal communications."

The one that hurt the most was "What wisdom did you learn from your grandparents?" I cannot see how that in anyway violated anything. Some of the answers told of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, meeting with Martin Luther King, Jr, and being on the bus when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat.

I believe that everyone has a right to speak, and that anything can be viewed as offensive to someone (like my grandparent's question). Therefore, no one should receive violations.

I've gotten a few violations. A couple of them were apparently offensive to someone, though it wasn't my intention to offend. The rest I don't even know why I was in violation. It didn't really make much sense.
You're right, there should be more restrictions on violations. We do still need it, but it should be restricted. Perhaps, as you say, having the users tagged for a short period, or have a certain amount of points taken away or something.

I've had several that were just stupid. Here's one of my favorites (mine is the answer):

Hello farkas419 (farkas419)

You have posted content to Yahoo! Answers in violation of our Community Guidelines. As a result, your content has been deleted.

Question: Are you longwinded or short & to the point?

Question Details: For me it depends. I can be short and to the point for this question.

Deleted Answer: For me it depends. I can be short and to the point for this question.

Reason of Violation:Not a Question or Answer

Others include violations for:
Chatting (when there wasn't any. One of the violations was for a question I asked, in which I had to add a bunch of details. They gave me my points back for that one.)
Insulting other participants (In particular, there was an answer where I said that some people, without naming anyone in particular, were childish. That was apparently a violation.)
Some of my others are on this question:

Oh, and definitely check out the link on that question. It's pretty amusing.

To me, three things equal a violation:
1. Targeting a Y!A user in a question or answer.
2. Insulting a Y!A user BY NAME in a question or answer.
3. If a question or answer contains profanity, or anything inappropriate.

Other than those three things, I refuse to report anyone.

i assume that i'm a rarity on YA, as i've got deserved each and every violation i are growing to be to be. i've got basically gotten a number of them. The final one replaced into for going off on some guy who replaced into ranting and raving against the Marine Corps. He replaced into asserting stuff approximately how they are all liars and how stupid all of them are. the two one among my mothers and fathers have been Marines, and not lengthy in the past we buried my mom with finished Marine honors. i assume I went slightly some distance with a number of my comments approximately what this guy could desire to anticipate if he ever reported any of stupid issues he replaced into spouting, to a Marine's face. The others have been of a matching vein. wager I purely could desire to stay out of the Politics area. i'm getting slightly warm under the collar by using what many of the persons say there.

There was actually a Republican Lawyer on the political sections - who's job was to report people that asked questions she didn't particularly like.

It is litterally incredible the lengths some organisations go to..

All the violations were ludicrous..

I think shes gone now thank god.

Once, the person had an avatar of the leaf of plant that is smoked to get high and their user name was "smokin'" something. They were spewing a series of antagonistic religious questions threatening everyone who didn't believe in what they did would go to hell. I responded with you are smoking too much _____. I got violated because it infringes the rules to mention illicit substances and imply another user partakes. The person was baiting people to do this with their user name and avatar.

I've gotten 3 violations, stating that I didn't answer the question.

In my way of thinking: some questions don't deserve a well thought out answer.

It has solely to do with how many people complain. Period. There's nobody at Yahoo examining case-by-case to see whether you actually violated their TOS. It's totally unfair.

In other words, if you say something demonstrably true, but unflattering to a particular demo who happens to read what you wrote and flag it - see ya.

I can understand that Yahoo doesn't have the human resources to look at each complaint intelligently, but in that case, I don't think they should have this "violation" system at all.

Reading the answers you got, I don't get it at all. None of those things sound strange to me. But I see foul language, ethnic and racial slurs, hate speech all the time and it doesn't go away, so I guess that's not a violation. Go figure.

Some people said they knew who reported them. How do they know that?

Yeah...1 or 2. I don't remember the details but my reaction was, "FOR THAT!!!" (1 was expected, BTW, as it was intentionally insulting)

Many of my answers, especially those that dispute the foundations of christianity, are not well received...but I give the christians here credit for NOT claiming them to be violations.
