nicotine is a stimulant and you always want more because it is addicting.
alcohol is a depressant and it kills off brain cells over time, even to the point of causing psychosis.
in the short term you will feel fine, even elated, relaxed, like cool, and relaxed.
in the long term your body will depend on these chemicals for the same effect physically AND mentally. Mentally it's more of an expectation, I need a ciggie - to wind down, to deal so to speak. or I need a drink for the same reasons. More often than not, cigs and booze go together - you get a beer and then you want to light up - it feels good i know, i've been there.
more and more people now think smoking and drinking is uncool, a marked shift since the late 90s. the trick i think is to get people to see these activities as socially unacceptable, uncool, such that if you do them you'll be stuck outside in the cold, outside the bar, at least in what concerns ciggies. for booze, the time is not now for it to fade out. hopefully it will, but that's MHO.

i've read people with mental illnesses tend to smoke because the nicotine actually gives them a boost...
drinking depresses the system and the brain... so if a person suffers from depression, alcohol consumption isn't their wisest choice.. it tends to make a person worse, especially when someone drinks "too much" -- even lasting several days after drinking.
besides, i think that some of us tend to drink to "escape from reality" and i've noticed (through my own experience) drinking can be a symptom of emotional problems.
take care.
