What is the best type of Artist Easel. I wish to buy my wife a new easel as a present. She works mainly with oil paints if that makes any difference?

The best type of easel for me is the classic santa fe iv easel.
it is versatile you can put two canvases side by side and you can move your paintings around without any effort. the levels make it great.
You can get it at blick art supplies.

That's a very personal choice among artists and I don't think you should do this on your own. Easels range from floor easels to table easels to portable ones that you can take outdoors. Prices range from $10 to the thousands, depending on the make. Some artists don't even use easels, preferring to use a large board propped up against the wall, etc.; some paint on the floor.
Before you lay out the bucks, find out what she needs and wants.

Give her a gift certificate to her favorite art store...a good studio easel will run about $200-$600. A table easel will be about $100-$200. Discount art houses like Jerry's Artarama, ASW are good bets.

If you REALLY want to get her something it better be a card with the saying "I owe you one Easel, you find it, i'll buy it"

An easel to an artist is way to important to have someone else pick out......

The BEST thing you could do if you really wanted to get her one is go to

http://www.jerrysartarama.com/art-supply-stores/online/1963

http://www.dickblick.com/categories/easels/

then sit and go... "Hey honey... Look what I found... Which one would you like????"

NOT doing so would be like buying a weightlifter a weight bench without their input....

You need her input... You really do

I made my own easel... What they want for some of the models are WAY overpriced…

Really depends on the size canvas she works with and the space available in your home. I have bought several in the past but the only one Ive kept is the one i can fold away! Bring an example of her work to a good art supply store (not a stationary store) and ask them of the ideal size easel needed

Does she take her work outside? If so get as light as one as possilbe. Also what is the max size canvas she works on. This may be mute in your case but when I look for one (I have 9 - I usually have several going at once) I look at canvas size limits first.

How much ROOM do you want to devote to the thing. Some of them take up a lot of room.

Locking wheels are nice.

The next thing is a shelve; ist GREAT to have one and some come with not only a shelve but storage....never enough for me so I don't buy them with that. I use a rolling cabnet.

Try Jerrys Artorama. They have an internet site and store located around the country in USA> I have gotten all but two from them over the years. I think they are having a nice sell right now. I just got a new catalogue in yesterday.

You could go to an art supply store & ask an associate that works there. They would be more than happy to help you & might have something that they prefer themselves (look at it as time tested & approved).
As far as an art easel; are you looking to buy the very best b/c its for your wife, buy what could be used most for her skill, or are you looking to save money?
You should just go to a store & look around though.

Great gift but that one lady is right you shouldn't do it alone she should be apart of it!

be creative and go to a store and buy a cheap one or a mini one for her and attach a little note on it saying together we are going to store of choice to get easel of choice. so you get the one you want! wrap that... easer to wrap too!!! and it shows that you put some thought behind it!

you could even paint the note ! now that would be a fun creative way of doing something!

Try www.budgetartsupplies.co.uk they have a very good selection, I just bought one for my neighbours daughter for her birthday and their service was excellent. It arrived the next day.
