1991 and below , if it had a v8 IT IS an AMC 360, If you are on a budget, It would be best to keep it AMC. Now if you pocket book is endless and know people who can weld fabricate and can rewire anything then go Cheverolet.
If you take a 1977 Cheverolet 350 and return it to stock specs, it will have less horsepower then a stock 1977 AMC 360.
The AMC 360 is a more durable block with a higher nickle conent,, meaning its stronger. You will most likely never throw a rod through the block on a 360,, but a Chevy 350 oh ya.. Now if you are building a monster 700 hp then go with Cheverolet, If you are just building something something you want to run healthy I would keep the AMC 360.. So what if a Chevy intake is $80 less, (brand new) It isnt that cheap, spark plugs are the same price, oil filters same price, lifters same price.. Cam shaft same price unless you go generic grind advantage cheverolet,, i mean whoopy do ,, you sAVE $500 ON PARTS MAYBE, but you spend about $300 hopefully to mod it,, then finding parts to fit and how to wire em up.. and dont forget custom exhaust for your cheverolet headers,,, LONG RUN,, Friends Dont let Friends Cross breed, If its 92 on up you have a chrysler 5.3 liter or possibly 5.2 318 ci
Good Luck

In a Jeep I would go small block. Many reasons, gas, weight, well ok, two reasons.
What type of jeep? Many bodies over the 60+ years since Bantam got the GP Contract.
I have seen Wranglers with everything from V-8 Hemis, large block to blueprinted 4c\yls, that one could put out 8500RPMs with a theoretical red line at 10k RPMs.
That is one of the sweet things about jeeps, built to take very very large motors, most civilian or production models had smaller ones placed in.
I would not like a Ford Type engine, either it is a Ford or it isn't. Of course Ford could be any motor from Mazda to Shelby Motor Works.
The VIN# on the Left side of the block will ID it for you.Make sure the transmission fits that spindle, or get one that does, and have a blast.
Whats involved is a fairly major job. Remove old motor, change motor mounts, (if needed) and is wise to sincethis may be the only time that you have such easy access to them.I am unsure about the Radiator, some may work, some may be to large or to small a volume.
My Haynes Manual on Fords has 15 pages on that.
Get a Haynes or a Chilton's Manual or a Ford/Jeep whatever book that explains the full procedures.Read it a few times, then go to work.
Never be in a hurry, that is how mistakes are made.Double check every step as you are doing the work, may want to keep a log of that. Up to you, I like documented work.
Photos are nice also.
If the Spindle or Yoke from Transmi will work, it is rather easy, sorta.
Best thing is have fun, enjoy and take pride in your work and all should come out okee dokee.
I did a 1967 Mustang, had a Ford 300 6cyl , pulled the motor, rebuilt it, plopped it back in, car ran for ten years before I sold it to a collector.
It was all OEM.
I also did a 455 Olds, that was FUN!
Go small block, less weight, and HP is HP, Torque is Torque, find the balance that you want, and plop that puppy in.
Most important of all, read the books then document the work, cheers.

Most of the early Jeep Wagoneers had Ford 360's in them. My 1981 Wagoneer Custom has a 4.2L made by Ford, but Ford parts will not fit on the engine. The block, intake and exhaust are all marked AMC. But, generally AMC used whatever they could get from any maker. But, yes some Chrysler engines found their way into Wagoneers.
If you looking for performance, go with a big block Hemi. If you are just going for a V8, go with a Chevy 350, for ease of acquiring parts and ease of maintenance.

A quick history of Jeep 4x4's and their manufacturers
The Company
1953: Kaiser takes over Willys-Overland.
1970: American Motor Co. (AMC) takes over Kaiser Jeep.
1982-1986: Renault owned AMC Jeep.
1987: Chrysler takes over AMC (and Jeep).
1998: Mercedes Benz and Chrysler merge to form Daimler Chrysler.
So any year (stock) Jeep after 1987 has a Chrysler engine in it.
Both Dodge and Ford produced a 360 engines but I think Ford phased it out in 1976, but Dodge manufactured them until they were phased out in 2003 (5.9L Hemi).
So unless you have a really old Jeep you should have a Chrysler engine in it and I doubt it has a Ford unless some motorhead dropped it in as a sick joke...
Why you would want to screw up a Jeep with a marginal Ford engine is beyond me. In an older CJ I had a friend drop a Ford 351, but that is a great engine so it makes sense, if you know what I mean.
Think AMC made a 360 engine as well, but nobody seemed to know anything about it.
Hope this helps.

Earlier Jeeps had whatever AMC put in them. There are plenty of 4X4 shops that can get that for you. They just did a show about doing exactly that on Spike channel on the cable last weekend. They had a kit from I can't remember where, but they had to cut the rivets, and remove the original motor mounts. I don't have a jeep, so I lost interest at that point.

Grand wag probably has the old amc 360, easiest thing to do is find another, or rebuild that one. They did put carbureted chev 2.8's in some cherokees and wagoneers,.....now THAT was disgusting!!!

The ebay VIN generator is faulty at cases. in case you counted 6 wires around the fringe of the distributor cap, it has the 4.0 inline 6 cylinder. you are able to manage to regulate the pre-populated record on the ebay ideas with the drop-down menus. be particular to envision the different ideas listed to ensure they are precise to boot. The eighth digit of your VIN could be an "S" --- it truly is a "P" if it became both.5 4-cylinder.
