The following website does a good job in portraying what happens after death.

In accordance with the lack of proof for literal punishment within the grave mentioned in the Quran, would it be safe to say a literal punishment does not exist?

From reading the biography of prophet Muhamemd there was a story about a Jewish woman who was doing house work for prophet Muhammad's wife (Aysha) and after she finished she asked god for Aysha to protect her from grave punishment. When prophet Muahammad came home, his wife asked him if there was such grave punishment and prophet Muhammad thought for a while and told her there was. He then went out to the street and started to shout warning people of grave punishment.

Based on the above story, it seems that grave punishment is mentioned in Jaudism and prophet Muhammed took it from them. However, it is not mentioned anywhere in teh Quran.

I hope this helps.

As a Muslim in my belief The punishment of grave is a must it has been told in quran various time as well as its mentioned in Ahadeeth`s of Prophet Mohamed(peace be upon him) in fact it also mentions He himself used to pray to God to protect him in his grave from punishment. As far as the lack of proof you mentioned i cannot say that i know for sure or i dont know. It is part of Muslim`s Creed that yes there`s Punishment of grave.
