As a 40 year old man, let me answer with this...depends.
What does he like? What's your budget like?
Personally, I would loooove anyone who bought me a Slingbox (under $200), but you have to have a need for a device like that.
Are you savvy? Build him a NAS box so he has tons of storage for music and video and back-ups.
Is he a gamer? Buy him a new game.
Does he chat/skype? Buy him a good quality USB headset and/or camera. Most people skimp on the quality of these when they buy their own.
Is he a computer enthusiast? Buy him a reference book for something he uses a lot. Something like "How to be a Photoshop god".
Does he have a HD tv, but still using his old DVD player? Buy him a good up-converting DVD player.
Just some ideas.

well....i got a 2 month trip to australia.
socks/ties/jumpers etc are out.
beer never goes wrong or any stupid childish gadget he can play with.
