My cat gets twitchy and licks all of the sudden, then runs and hides. I took him to the vet two days ago and got him a cortizone shot which usually works. Not this time.. It seems like when he gets into a sack or cardboard box it gets worse. I no longer have any of those in my house. Anyone have any ideas?

There are numerous things that cats can be allergic to, down to your carpet, to dust in the air. Also, have you had him checked for fleas? If its an inside cat and never had fleas before and gets them, they will start freaking out and going crazy. My 11 year old cat was this way when he contracted fleas from my outside cat. If the cortizone doesn't work any longer, maybe you should take him back to the vet and see if there is anything else you may be able to try. Also, let the vet know of the way the cat is acting. It might not be allergies at all, but a skin condition.

Also, avoid giving your cats any human medications, as certain human medications can cause stomach problems in cats and/or can be fatal!

I wouldn't have said allergy... I would lean towards fleas likely. Does the cat lick in the same spot then run ? Or is it just licking any spot then running? Cats have nerves that run over their shoulders and down the body.. If they regularly rub these nerves they can be come twitchy, and licking. Say for example the cat sits in the window but must go into the window between the hanging blind and the window edge, that nerve can get rubbed and it aggravates them. They can lick the nerve spot bald from over stimulating it.

Hi,
I actually did find something that helped. They are vitamins for cats called DermaStrength. They are made to strengthen a cat's dermis (or skin). You do have to be patient and 'pill' them everyday, but my cat is very good and let's me give him one everyday. I do split the pill up into 2 pieces though, as the pills are pretty big. Hope this helps! You can get them at any vet (not sure about what stores), and they cost about $6-$7 a bottle.

Cats can be allergic to many things...just like humans.
It's possible that there was something in the bag or box at one time and your cat maybe allergic to whatever that substance was or is.

It's also possible that your cat may have fleas.

If you've changed cat food recently he may be allergic to that.

My advice would be to call the Vet back and let them know that the cat isn't any better and ask what they recommend.

Good luck!

Cat allergies are really difficult to treat. Sometimes I few visits to the vet is necessary. At home, eliminate all possible irritants...such as carpet powders, air fresheners...my cat was really allergic to a new cat litter that I bought. Good luck!

my husband was watching the news the order day and it was referring to dogs but this may work for cats too. Give the cat human allergy medicine. Of course if would have to be in a lower dose.
