pull ups! Come on everyone knows that all you got to do is about twenty a day and keep increasing as you can do more. I do it and I look moderately well it takes little time and it shows really fast. (I also ride a bike which help as well, not as much though)
All you need is a bar from say Argos and your ready to go! If you stick at it you will see a big improvement

A good balance.

Start with many sit-ups and sit-ups with your elbow touching the leg on the other side (to build obliques/side-stomach muscles), low calorie diet (not killer low though, about 1200 calories is good...read the Zone Diet...it's not ultra-low-calorie fad diet), aerobic exercise 30-40 mins twice a week (to burn fat), interval workouts for twice a week (to teach your body to burn more fat / increase metabolism).
Doing these things will decrease body fat, something sit-ups alone will never do and long aerobic exercise alone won't do nearly as well as the combined steps above. YOU'LL NEED TO BE TRIM TO SEE YOUR NEWLY BUILT ABS, NO MATTER HOW STRONG THEY BECOME.

After a while (about 3 months or so, you should be able to do 150 sit-ups in a row), try graduating to high-resistance/LOWER-REPETITION (6-8 reps) ab exercises (using workout machines at a gym) which will concentrate on strength rather than sit-ups (which help more on tone then strength). THIS WILL MAKE YOUR ABS LARGER AND STRONGER THAN SIT-UPS.

The abs are made up of 4 musles groups, so its best to look for exercises that work as many of these muscles together. Its also a good idea to look for exercises that work the whole midsection (also the back) because strong ab muscles will do you no good if you have a weak back. The best exercise will involve twisting, because they move your midsection through its full range of motion...stretching and strengthening all the muscles. My favourite 2 are:
*Front swing:
Stand tall with feet shoulder width apart. Raise your arms straight out in front of you (parallel to the floor). Slowly twist your arms to the right, moving from your midsection, then twist back to the left. Repeat 30 times. You can hold weights in your hands to make it more challenging.
*Lying twist:
Lie on your back, with your arms at your side. Bend your knees and lift your legs so that you calfs are parallel to the floor. Then slowly drop your legs to the right, lift them back up, and then drop them to the right. Repeat 30 times. You can hold a weight in between your knees or wear ankle weights to make it more challenging.
Both of these exercises will challenge all of the muscles in your midsection, and strengthen your spine...bonus!
