Lemons, oranges, limes, kiwis, tomatoes, and sometimes even apples can make my tongue sting and occasionally make it swell a bit. Why?

Citrus fruits contain Citric acid, hence the sharp acidic taste.
you sound like you have a 'sensitivity' or mild allergy to fruits

Agree with others. There is a high acid level in the the fruits you list, and fruit irritates my tongue also. I find the only fruit I can tolerate is the apple tossed in some sugar, then baked. That seems to lower the acid level. Also, I add a bit of sugar in making tomato sauce, as that seems to help cut the acid level too. (the condition is called glossitis, you can find web site with good information)

Either you're sensitive, you have small cuts on your tongue(if you bite it or somesuch or eat hard foods a lot), or it could be a mild allergic reaction, where your body is saying "hey I don't like that". Ask your doctor to see if that's the case.

Because cirtus fruit contains fruit acids whic practically 'burns' your tongue. I think...
