She is at 55 days today (3-8-07). I have called two different vets. They just say to watch her closely, so I have taken off of work this week. One also said that this might be her normal temp. and that all dogs temps. are different and I shouldn't be worried. Are there any more experienced chihuahua breeders that might have any advice to give? Thank You!

I know pregnancy last 58-63 days. I have found thru research that chihuahua dogs usually give birth early because they are smaller dogs. Is this true?

If she has the pups now, it is likely they won't survive. Hopefully she hold off for a few more days. You should see a temperature spike of a few degrees and then a drop to 98.2 or below. Then she'll have them in 24 hours. My female went at 59 days both times she had babies. Keep her comfortable and keep watch on her at night (set an alarm or something so you can get up to check on her).

BTW she maintained a temp in the 99 degree range during the week before delievery.

Do you have your whelping box? I used a rubbermaid tote as it keeps the mess in when the babies are coming and easy to clean up afterwards. My girl was very cooperative with the tote and by having her babies in the afternoon (it was like she was waiting to have my attention LOL). Make sure you have your whelping kit ready (sicssors, dull is better than really sharp, iodine, for the cords, dental floss to tie the cords, a nasal bulb, in case you have to clear an air passage, stethescope, if you have one so you can tell if she's done having babies, towels to dry off the babies, and a heating pad set up in a box to keep the babies warm when she's having another but it's a good idea to put them on her between babies the nursing will stimulate contractions). Make sure you have a scale handy to weight the babies at birth and at least once a day there after for a couple weeks.

Good luck.

You want to start early on and know your dog's normal temperature. And sometimes temperature isn't a real great indicator. The fact that she is at day 55, says you have at least 3 more days til she is ready to whelp. Between days 58 and 65 she'll whelp. Before that and the odds of the puppies surviving are slim to none. Because they are pregnant for such a short time, they need to stay in there at very least 58 days.
Watch her for nesting... Ripping up blankets, rearraging things to make a nest for her puppies. Have her whelping box set up and ready and start taking her there and getting her used to being there. If she likes it and is comfortable, you can hope she'll head there when she is ready. Watch for her water breaking.

@ 55 days I would first question the thermometer you used, and would want to verify the reading with a different one. She should still be over 100 deg checked rectally.
Probably 99% of the time a dogs temp will dip below 100 deg on day 62, and they will whelp on day 63.

I think you took off work a bit early. Usually gestation is to 63 days for any dog. You may have some time to wait before she whelps.
You can watch her but until she starts to show more sign of going into labor besides her temp. she is probably just enjoying your company for a few days.

The average length for canine pregnancy is 63 days. The temp does drop before labor starts but I think you still have a few days to go before the pups arrive.

it particularly is a appropriate question to ask your breeding mentor or vet. Why might you ask a team of random as a rule unqualifed strangers over the internet, lots of whom understand bugger all approximately canines, once you've gotten a splendidly sturdy vet on the tip of a telephone? in case you observed the advice some human beings provide you in this website, your canines may be lifeless call your vet. If that is out of hours the place you're, call your emergency vet. don't have one? Get out the telephone e book and seek for one.
