I use to go to the beach so I could get darker and I'd have no problem tanning or getting burned but now that I don't live near the beach anymore I've been going to the tanning salon cause I was getting really light but I don't really know much about tanning salons. How often can I go in a month? Is a 12 min bed better than a 20 min bed? If you have any other advice let me know. Thanx!

Tanning can be worse than real sun. The sun has nutrients your body needs. But prolonged time in the sun is also harmful. I still go tanning but I just don't over expose myself. When you burn, that's when you are at risk for having skin problems or getting skin cancer. Stick to the lower powered beds. You don't have to go a long time to maintain a good color. A couple of times a week at 12-15 minutes each time should do. I always use a tanning lotion with a bronzer, it REALLY helps!

Well im not going to lecture you on how tanning beds are dangerous because everyone else did a good job of doing that for me, however I did want to let you in on a couple alternatives. There are mystic tans that are offered at tanning salons (dallas cowboy cheerleaders use them) it costs about 20 dollars per session, however most places have plans, like 8 for 110 or something) .. Then there is airbrush tanning. Thats where an employee at a tanning salon sprays you with tanner. This costs the same as mystic tanning, however they airbrush you so natural looking. They're are trained and can make you look skinnier, your boobs bigger, your thighs smaller, just by how they apply it. Its AMAZING. You could also try tanning lotion or mousse. I use St. Tropez tanning mousse. Its really great, they sell it at bath and body for about 45 dollars but it lasts for about 2 months, so its worth it. It makes my naturally fair skin look really bronzed. Everyone asks me when I got back from vacation I look so tan!!! The greatest thing about all this is none of these will give you skin cancer or damage your skin! Im 18 and I dont want to have leather skin when Im 35 and I would guess you wouldnt either!Hope this helps!

Tanning beds are far worse than the actual sun. In a tanning bed you get a more direct and constant exposure to harmful and damaging "rays". I suggest limited tanning outside, and the rest of the time wear sunscreen. Even then you are still running the risk of damaging your skin in the future. Try tanning lotions instead. They have come quite a long way from what they used to be. The key is gradual build up. When you try and bottle tan all at once, you usually end up looking orange. Try the Jergen's Natural Glow moisturizer. They do a nice job!

The only advice I can give you in good conscience is don't do it. I did it for years - both sun and tanning beds and ended up with melanoma (discovered when I had just turned 32). I was lucky in that it was way early and I only ended up with a 2" scar on my forearm as a result, but I constantly worry it will return and ever 'new' spot I see on my body freaks me out.

They are both harmful. If you must have a tan, spray tan instead.

if you go to a tanning salon, if u notice the girls there are orange, do not go there, the tanning beds maybe bad and/or they use bad lotion. the best lotion is any by designer skin. i am very fair complexion and when i tan, i look bronze never orange. i have used various types of lotions by designer skin.

three words: don't go there. tanning salons can be death traps. but if you do want to go, go for the 12 minute one first and if you're not tired, and you think you're too light, go ahead for the 20 minute one. just don't fall asleep. sorry if i scared you.
