It depends on the circumstances. Is the officer directing traffic? If so, he/she will wear white gloves so their hands are more visible to the drivers.
Is the officer investigating a scene/a pulled over car/etc.? Then they need to wear rubber gloves to keep from contaminating the scene.
Are they frisking/searching an individual who is bleeding or who may have needles about their person? Then the gloves are for the officer's protection.
I believe they also wear gloves at events in which they are in their dress uniforms (funerals, awards ceremonies, etc).
Finally, it may be cold.

Ok, as a Police Officer I wear gloves for many different reasons. First off I wear them to protect myself against blood born diseases. I also wear another type of glove to search people. Putting my hands in someones pockets can be dangerous. The ones I use are resistant to punctures and cuts. When searching high risk individuals it is important to protect myself. They can place razor blades in the seams of their clothing so we cut our self while doing a search of their clothing. Also we drive so much that some wear gloves while driving. You were not very specific as to when you were talking about so I tried to cover all the bases. Hope it helped.

Believe it or not, most wear them because they "Look Cool" but they sure wouldn't tell you that. They'll tell you it's because of what most people told you on here, protection from needles, germs etc. Most don't wear them except in the winter time since most think they look silly in the summer. Trust me, the ones who do wear them all year long get picked on by the ones who don't. Usually behind their backs. "back in the day" I remember if Officers put on gloves before responding to a "bad call" someone was going to get their *** kicked, since way back then the only gloves worn by Officers were "Sap Gloves" (Lead weighted) Course, back then we didn't have fancy equipment like "Tasers and spring loaded billy clubs like the ASP, etc. etc. It was "You are under arrest, wrestle, BAM, lights out, handcuff's, whip out a report and off to the next calI you'd go". I kind of miss those days.

Latex gloves are worn to process and protect evidence. Most of the leather looking gloves seen worn by police are specially manufactured gloves to protect them from cuts and needle sticks

Because people are nasty and officers need to protect their health and prevent taking germs home to their families as well. Also to prevent injury and keep their hands warm. depends on the officer and the type of gloves.

Because it's cold outside. They are dealing with evidence that may have fingerprints on it. They have to touch a derelict crackhead. There are many reasons for cops to wear gloves.
