I was extremely reactive to commercial dairy and gave it up for over 10 years. I missed it desperately. A friend suggested I try RAW milk and dairy, and I was so skeptical that I actually drank my first glass of it in the parking lot of the hospital, to be prepared in case I had a reaction. I was fine, and now consume raw milk, butter, and cheese as a staple in my diet. There are many cow share programs and local food co ops where you can get raw milk. I am wondering if anyone else has had the same results with raw dairy?

Hmm....lactose intolerance runs very high in Native American populations. (I'm one of them)

Never heard of this. However, raw milk is NOT healthy for pregnant women. Unpastuerized dairy can actually cause miscarriages.

It could be that you've become less lactose intolerant with age (or better health, etc.), but it's also true that many other things that irritate the immune system can add up and put you over a critical limit which *will* cause a reaction.
For example, if you have pollen allergies and it's the allergy season or you live in a highly-allergenic neighborhood, or if you've been very stressed or sick, it might take a lot less lactose to create a response in your system than if those things hadn't been present.

Also lactose intolerance can be mitigated by just not consuming too much at one time, or without other foods consumed at the same time.

Btw, you can always eat yogurt (or kefir, etc.) since most of the lactose has been eaten up in making it**, and perhaps other things as well. (Most people who are lactose-intolerant don't have a problem with fermented milk.)

**to get rid of *all* the lactose in yogurt, make it yourself and incubate it for a full 24 hrs

According to allergy tests, I am allergic to shrimp, crab and salmon (boo hoo). But the allergist told me that if I avoided the offending food for a couple of years, and then ate it only in moderation, I wouldn't have problems... and she was right, thank god.

I am not lactose intolerant but I'm not a big fan of dairy.

I do however, love my tasty cheese!

Glad to hear that you've overcome your intolerance.
