This depends on you, your personality, your lifestyle and your environment. Are you home a lot or at work? Do you live in a house with a backyard or an apartment? Do you like large or small dogs (I always say if you want a dog under 20lbs., get a cat...LOL). Do you have an active lifestyle? Do you want a pet who depends on you or one that is independent for the most part?
Cats can be great pets, especially if you don't have much time to spend with them. They are a pretty independent species, and usually come to you for affection on their own terms. Many people misunderstand a cat who rubs against the owner's legs as always being affection. Well, sometimes it is, but most times it is a way of marking the human as their territory...L
Cats typically have a longer life span than dogs (20 yrs. average), so they are a long-term committment. You will need to have a litter box in your home and clean it daily (not really that big of a deal as long as you do clean it daily).
Dogs require more from you: They NEED interaction and attention from you on a regular basis, they need to be trained, housebroken and daily exercise. If you live in an apartment, a small or medium-sized dog would be best. If you have a backyard and plenty of space, well then I prefer large dogs (they actually are less aggressive and don't bite/nip as much as the smaller breeds).
Are you an energetic person or more laid back? To answer your question most accurately, I would need to know more about you and your personality, as this is a huge factor in determining not only what species is best for you, but also what breed. If you would like the best answer possible, contact me via email and I will be more than happy to help you choose the ideal species/breed that you would be happiest with (dlljohnson@verizon.net).

If you want someone who will do anything to please you, get a dog.

If you want someone who will bring you the newspaper without tearing through it first for the sports page, get a dog.

If you want someone who'll make a total fool of himself because he's so glad to see you, get a dog.

If you want someone who eats whatever you put in front of him and never say his mother made it better, get a dog.

If you want someone who's always eager to go out any time you ask and anywhere you want to go, get a dog.

If you want someone who can scare away burglars without waving a lethal weapon around, endangering you and all the neighbors, get a dog.

If you want someone who never touches the remote, couldn't care less about Monday Night Football, and watches dramatic movies with you as long as you want, get a dog.

If you want someone who'll be content just to snuggle up and keep you warm in bed, and whom you can kick out of bed if he slobbers and snores, get a dog.

If you want someone who never criticizes anything you do, doesn't care how good or bad you look, acts as though every word you say is worth hearing, never complains, and loves you unconditionally all the time, get a DOG!

On the other hand...

If you want someone who never comes when you call him, totally ignores you when you walk in the room, leaves hair all over the place, walks allover you, prowls around all night and comes home only to eat and sleep all day, and acts as though you are there only to see that HE’s happy...

Get a CAT

Cat: needs no walking, no bathing, doesn't bark, is more independent and so are you with her. And cats are very attached to you, even though people who never had them think otherwise.
Dog: he is your companion, more expressive of his feelings to you, you can go out and play together, but it is a full time job to keep and train him, and solve problems that may occur. You must always keep in mind that you can't be away from home too long, the dog will have to pee or will miss you enough to bark the neighbourhood up!

Neither is better than the other, but one may be more suited to your lifestyle.

First, are you looking to adopt, and why?
Second, what kind of life style do you have? Canines require more from their humans than felines do. Especially puppies. If you are going to be away from home for more than 8 hours a day, do you really think that would be fair to the puppy/dog?

It depends. If you like a quiet companion, a cat is better. If you like a loyal companion, a dog is better. I personally prefer the dog.

dog... dog's seem to have a connection with people. If you come home and feel lonely, you can feel comfort in having your dog. I don't think the same can be said about cats. Labradors are great dogs... if you want a a smaller dog, shitzu's are great. good luck.

I have both :) + OTHER animals,
my advice: find a friend that has either and borrow the cat or dog for a week to find out for yourself what's easier :)
OR go to a shelter near you and become a volunteer but there you will not have the ovenight expierience ;)

Both. Dogs are loyal and protective and cats are quiet and they try to confort you after a long hard day at work.

It depends. If you like a quiet and giving companion, get a cat. If you want a loyal and obedient companion, get a dog.
