We have 4 puppies which are ready to be homed. Two are being picked up tonight. My question is...Should the mother be there to see them leave? I've heard stories that if they are not present they will spend the rest of their lives looking for their missing pups?

Pups are 9 weeks, fully vaccinated (just need boosters and worming but it's too soon for that), all going to good homes (mostly friends and neighbours)

First I hope these pups are at least 8 weeks old!!!
I have never found a mother dog to look for her pups after they are gone. In fact just the oppsite. If you properly weened the pups from the mother than the mother is going to be fine with them gone.
P.S. thanks for giving me there ages. I always worry about the breeders who think 6 weeks old is ok to be taken away from the mom. I applaud your correct decision to wait!

I have/am a breeder for many years now and my female's has always been present as people like to see both parents of the pups and my females have never cared about puppies leaving they have actually been very happy after the pups are all gone, no more puppies to bug them and hang off them anymore. its up too you if you want her present or not it really wont matter toher if her pups leave. but most people like to see the parents of pups.

depends on the animals nature- ours are always there to see the pups go- once we had her in the back room and was not a good idea, she whined for 4-5 days until we put in a few Mcdonald stuffed lions in her crate! She babied those and was fine! yes the pups were 8wks old when they left !

I used to breed Border Terriers and never had them go until they were 9 weeks old. Believe me the mum is ready to let them go ! The Mum and Dad of mine were always around as I used to like people seeing the parents, when their puppies were going they just lay there and neither of them bothered loking for them. It was me that cried !!

If momma has weaned them then she does not want to do anymore for them nature says your on your own mom won't care one way or the other if she sees them go or not she may look for the little tykes for awhile just to have something to play with but she will forget quickly

very sad occasssion for mum and you when pups leave. I dont think she should be, she will try to protect them, when they go.
My litter last year, mum stayed in the kitchen and she was fine once pups went, she did'nt seem to miss them at all. I think it helps if they go gradually and not all at once.

I would shut the mum out. If she doesn't see them go she probably won't even notice they've gone. Dogs live for the present, she won't miss them - she'll probably appreciate getting back to normal.

She won't care either way, and that is an old wives tale.
