I always end up with sticky fingers and crumbs everywhere.

I like all these little obvious answers, they're funny. However, I want techniques!

I actually slice the top off with a knife [usually a plastic knife that you get at the place where you bought it (unless you make your own at home)] and slather it with butter and pick it up and eat it like a tostada. LOL! Then I use the same knife and a fork to divide the bottom into quarters and eat each piece with my fork. I know, I'm a neatnik, but I don't have sticky fingers and all the crumbs stay in the paper muffin cup [or on my napkin].

open mouth, insert muffin. No, just kidding. My little neat freak daughter breaks off little pieces of it. Not much to be done about the sticky fingers, short of holding it in a napkin. Crumbs are part of the fun of eating anyway. Look at it this way-I am allergic to wheat and havent had a muffin in years-I would love to have your dillema. Think about me next time you have one, be greatful that you can, and just brush those little crumbs aside and lick your fingers. I would, if I could. *sigh*

Take a napkin (or, paper towel) and spread it on the table.
Break the top off the bottom of the muffin.
Eat the top first - less crumbs.
Then the bottom...which is usually best eaten by breaking off small chucks with your fingers.
Any remaining crumbs can be routed to your mouth when you fold the napkin and tap the crumbs in.

Well, you either need to take a moment to sit down at a table and eat your muffin with a knife and a fork or if you are eating it on the fly you may have to live with the stickiness and the crumbs and maybe carry wet-naps with you. :)

if you break pieces off the muffin instead of cutting or biting it, you should find it easier and, maybe, more becoming. oh, if you don't have a plate then be sure you have a napkin to catch those crumbs and wipe your fingers.
