That's a really good question. However, you said that you have known this guy for a long period of time. Therefore, I am assuming that you know more personal things about him, like what he likes to do in his spare time (movies, sports events, etc). Put yourself in a situation that you know you'll both feel comfortable in. It could even be something as simple as going out to eat at one of his favorite restaurants. Let him know that you're just trying to hang out and see how he reacts from there. Personally, I would start by inviting him to do things in public. Therefore, you both will feel comfortable and there won't be as much pressure as a more intimate situation, such as wining and dining at home, inviting him over to watch DVD's, etc. Show an interest in him, without smothering him. Let him know, in subtle ways, that you care about him.....even more so than a friendship, if that's what you're trying to establish. Don't be scared, though. You only live life once. Like they say, if you don't ask, than you'll never know. The worst thing that he can do is say no to a relationship and just want to continue to be close friends. Good luck!

If you've known each other that long and are comfortable talking about the relationship you could just bvring it up to see how he feels about it. If you don't feel like you can talk about it with him then keep flirting and then when a moment is right lean in and kiss him. See where it does from there.
