What is the medical term for getting your esophagus strecthed and what exactly do they do, my husband is having it done tomorrow, and we were curious about recovery time. Could someone at least give me the medical term for esophagus streaching, so I can do some research?

my dad had this done, and does better right after. of course the medication they give him to do the procedure makes him tired for the day. but, he doesn't get choked as much when eating, and it actually helps his snoring problem at night after also!

Hi
It's not considered "major" surgery, but there are things that you should do to prepare. The Dr. should have this info. for you. Recovery time will depend on the patient... most of the time you are 100% the next day. It is recommended that you start your intake with liquids and then progress back to usual by the next day. Give the body its time to recover....24 hours to resume a regular diet is not a huge deal if you consider what rushing things might cause. Good luck! It will be fine :)

During surgery, a big part of your stomach is bypassed, making it harder for you to take in food in large quantities. Basically, you can only eat much smaller portions. Eating is a natural addiction and it is easy to tell somebody to diet, but very, very hard to do so. This surgery has helped and improved the life on millions. Depends, what healthcare you have, they may pay for it. Go, change Doctors, go to ten, if you have to. They are suppose to provide service for you. Good luck.

i don't remember the medical term but they just put you to sleep end do it. if i'm not mistaking it's a one day surgery and takes about an hour to do. it's not major surgery at all. nothing to worry about.

OUCH
Wouldn't it make more sence to chew you food well.

other - Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas (natural muscle relaxers) daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.

Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.

The cure - start with a professional massage, (if this does not do it you probably need a chiropractor as well) you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).

For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.

That is absolutely something he needs to ask the surgeon. Never go into any surgery without talking to the surgeon about what is being done, risks, recovery, etc.

It is called "esophageal dilation":

He may be a little sore afterwards, but he will be ok.
