This is probably not the answer you are looking for, but truthfully, a good DJ is worth the money!! Your DJ is not "just playing music" at your reception, he/she will also be serving as the event's emcee, and that alone can make or break the mood of your reception.

There is a reason the "top" wedding DJ's are hard to get - it's because they're good at what they do! If you've ever been to a less-than-fun reception, think about why -- generally it's because the dj didn't do a very good job of getting the crowd into the party spirit!

I don't live in your area, but as I am also planning a wedding, I understand your problem.

-Do you have any relatives that have DJ experience and/or equipment?
-Can you book them for a reduced period of time in the evening only (i.e. Use a CD for your walk down the aisle and for dinner music)?
-Have you tried to make an offer? Some small/private DJ's may consider getting paid less over not getting the job at all.
-Have you tried your local college/high school for getting a student DJ?
-Have you checked the back of your phonebook for coupons? Some have coupons that you can use for services, including DJ's.
-Wedding shows often have DJ's looking for work. They often offer specials.
-Lastly, if you can't afford to spend much at all, you could always hook up an iPod with songs you have picked to the hotel/hall's sound system. You can ask for a microphone, and have a relative MC.

Good luck!

Do you have an ipod or a laptop computer? You can set up playlists that are as long as you need them to be and it's fairly inexpensive, plus you get to choose everything that is played. It costs around $50-$100 to rent the speakers or you could possibly find a friend that has them. It personalizes your wedding more and you don't have to worry about whether or not the dj is going to suck. I'm using my laptop for my wedding and I'm going to use itunes playlists to set everything up, and then I never have to think about the music again!

They are expensive. Try hiring a wedding band, they're sometimes cheaper. But don't try to do it yourself. I've been to one wedding where the couple rented speakers and hooked up a laptop with MP3s instead of hiring a DJ. This did not work at all. The groom was busy all night trying to play the right songs, but random people would go up there and switch songs halfway through, and no one danced.

If you have access to the internet, I would recommend you search on www.craigslist.org and choose the closest city to you. But beware of scams (as with many services on the internet generally). Be sure that you have a contract and read it carefully before signing it. You can also go to www.theknot.com to find DJs in your area. They also have tips to hiring vendors such as DJs.

I would say..spend the money for the good DJ...you will want someone who knows how to work the crowd and that has a good speaking voice to do your music that way you don't have to bothered with it and you can spend more time with your guests and your new spouse on that day.

You could make your own cd's then play them in random mode. Or maybe a friend would like to get into dj'ing and you could offer to give him a start.
