typically getting licensed requires 40 hrs of classroom work. I was wondering if there is an online course and test that can be taken to substitute for this.

This varies by state. Some states insist on the real classroom, some will accept online learning with "classroom equivilent". You'll have to check with your state insurance department.

The actual TEST, however, must be taken in person, at a designated testing location.

Don't know what state you are in, but in GA you are required to attend a 40 hour class. You can renew online but not get licensed that way. I don't know of any state that allows the classroom requirement to be done online. I would think it may happen soon though.

depends on your state. But most likely, you will have to do SOME time in a class. You may be able to split it.
