Hi Cherry,

I have to agree with all the other post, 167,000 miles is just too many to take a chance with that much money.

Buying from a private owner doesn't necessarily mean the car is in good condition, it depends on how many owners, the type of miles driven and how well it's been maintained by those owners.

I believe you'll be better off to start searching again, if your budget is with in the price range of the cavalier you should be able to find a car with a lot less miles.

we own a car dealership and use edmunds.com go to appraise a used car. This will give you market value for the car you are looking at in your area they base the price on that. THey figure out the average miles per year and either deduct if more or add if less! I have a 1997 cavalier on my lot and it has 139,000 miles on it and we have it priced under market value for 2,000 dollars. What always gets me excited is when people bring in cash they say I will buy it if you take X'amount (has to be in the reasonable price range I was asking) but taking 500 dollars-1000 usually is no big deal!

Hope this helps and being a girl can be a sign for people in general to think we are oblivious to car stuff!

New tires? Big deal... they probably spent $20 for some Yugolsavian tires.

For $4000, get her a Japanese car that her classmates aren't going to laugh at.

1997 Acura Integra
1992 Lexus SC400
1998 Honda Accord
1999 Honda Civic
2000 Nissan Altima
1999 Toyota Camry

I don't think I would buy it you might get cheated that is a lot of money, I have recently blown several thous on old used cars it took me two before I got the one that I have now which seems to be a pretty good one, but this one sounds like I might be leery. Just make sure that you get it looked over good before you get it and that is still no guarantee.

Too many miles for that price. You should be able to get a 2000 with 89000 miles on it for that price. Cavaliers are dependable, but that is high mileage.

a car that is six years old should not have that many miles on it. that is almost 30,000 miles a year!

the average life of a car is about 10 years or 120,000 miles. i would not buy it

it is also not worth 3,100 dollars. if you want it, give a max of two thousand...thats it.

a set a new tires is a few hundred bucks.

If it was a Toyota, maybe a Corolla, I'd go for it. But an American car with that many miles might be asking for headaches
