At her age, it shouldn't be too difficult, as she is growing fast. There are two ways of doing this - get her active, and don't allow her to eat junk food.

Get her involved in some sort of regular sports club - gymnastics, dance, trampolining, etc. Let her try a few things to see what she enjoys. If she doesn't have a bike, get her one, and go out for bike rides with her, or get her some roller skates. Take her swimming.

Diet-wise, make sure she has no access to any sweets, crisps, chocolate, cakes, biscuits, etc. If it is not in the house, she wont be able to eat it. Make the only snacks available fruit, raw veg, or yoghurt. She may not like it at first, but eventually she will come around. Also avoid sugary drinks. Just give fruit juice or water. Give her a treat every now and then, but not too often.

Also, I would avoid telling her what you are doing. Don't mention her weight, or putting her on a diet. Just say you are changing the family eating habits, because it is healthier. Don't let her know it is about her weight, or she will end up with a complex about it at a young age.

This shouldn't be hard to do, as long as you are consistent and persistent. She will feel much more energetic herself, too, and be willing to do more physical activity, and keep the weight off herself.

The same way you could make her do anything at age 2........feeding her what she needed and diversion.

I imagine you provide breakfast, lunch and tea......and you can say no.....so how is she getting more calories than she needs?

If its via drinks.....only get low cal stuff and dont buy takeaway anymore. If its via desserts...they arent useful unless they are just fresh fruit......its not good for you either and doesnt teach her how to cook or eat well.

Kids dont have a brain...they are just squids looking for boundaries. You are a fully grown calamarie and should know better.

Personally...with my kids...who grew up to be slim, sweet, kind and good. I never fed them main meals in the evening......just did a small but varied platter of cheese, meats/poultry, salad/vegs, fruit, crackers/bread at night (with a toy in the middle, that they would choose, to make it look interesting..ie car/dinosaur/doll) and a glass of milk on the side. They could eat it or not...it was there at 6pm regardless until they went to bed....no forcing they could graze as much or little as they liked and could ask for more of the same. Hungry kids never starve themselves.

Unfortunately...I think with children...if we are decent parents...we get into a mode...of wanting to do everything for them, to make them not CRY or feel pain...to make them so happy that they wont cause US pain by complaining. If we did everything a baby/child (a totally unformed brain) wanted.....thats an unguided missile. How can that child form an opinion, like your own, without any system at all?

Focus on improving her self-esteem. Do not demean her, especially regarding her weight issue. Do not be super strict about what she eats. Allow her occasional treats or she will sneak food behind your back. If she feels deprived, she will binge when she has the opportunity, so that is another reason to allow her some treats.

Set some rules. Like: No eating between meals. Don't buy crisps, cakes, biscuits, etc. Buy fruit.
Don't cook specificially for her. And try to get her interested in something that wil take her mind off food. Exercise, etc etc.

She is very young and unless she is really obese then you should try not giving her bread and soda and too much sugar. Sugar makes you want to eat more and all day. Have her drink more water then anything else.

feed her clean foods....set an example by working out and living a healthy lifestyle....dont be too strict on her though, as she is still just a kid and is being molded by those around her....so a treat once a week would be acceptable...not everyday though

By example.
Eat and feed her healthy food. Get active. Take her to an indoor pool and go swimming. Go bowling, sliding, skating, etc. Get your butts moving!!
