.rar is the file extension for one of the compressed file formats. Other such formats are .zip, .cab, .lzh and so on.
Many softwares can open .rar files. WinRAR is one, ZipGenius (a freeware) is another.

you can open .rar files using winrar.
winrar can open .7z files,.rar,.zip files
rar is best of winzip and 7z zipper
