We have one in St Helens called The Sitar. It's an Indian restuarant and because they don't have an alcohols license you are allowed to take your own in. Are there any more about?

Yes there are a few about. What usually happens is that they go on in this way for a year or two and as trade builds up and makes a license worth while, then they change. I was caught out by one in Evesham that changed and their drinks are extremely expensive. Fortunately the food is fairly priced and is very good.
Hello to the Cheltenham lady on a previous answer. I am in the Bishops Cleeve area.

It all depends on which country you are in.
In Australia, and then I'm talking Western Australia, very many of the restaurants are BYO - especially the Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese and other "ethnic" ones.
Obviously, the classier ones in all categories will have their own drinks licence, and then corkage etc will be charged if you BYO.
But your average "corner scoff shop" does not want to go to the expense of a licence and also stocking the drinks etc, so BYO is very much the go over here.
I seem to recall that this was the situation last time in Oakland, near San Francisco CA last time I was there.

The Philly area is loaded with BYOBs. It's a very big trend and most of these restaurant pay special attention to their food. Some charge a corkage fee, and some restaurants that have a liquor license designate a day that diners can byob.

Interesting. Here in Ontario, if you don't have a liquor licence, you can't have ANY on the premises. What they're doing could be a serious no no but that doesn't matter to you. There are many places these days that allow you to take in your own wine. They charge you an opening and corking fee. If you don't finish the bottle, they have to close it as it is illegal for you to walk around outdoors with an open alcohol bottle.

There are many BYOB (Bring your own Bottle) places around. I personally think they are much better then places that do sell alchol because you get much more value for your meal.
