There's this girl at the supermarket I go to who's just awesome "at least in my eyes" and she seems friendly enough. I never talked to her but we've exchanged a few "knowing" looks.

The problem is; I keep very close relations with my family, and they are - alas - a few of the world's greatest snobs. Their concept of class & family heritage is that of 16 century nobility.

I don't - and I never- shared their pretentiousness but I know for sure they will never approve of this girl & might as well treat her badly. Financially, I need nothing from them, thanks to my own fine career & a "birth grant" given by Grand dad. But I love them dearly & wouldn't want to cause a rift.

What to do? I like the girl, & I want to keep my family

Dont you think that it is time for your family to grow up and learn that they are no better than anyone on this planet just because they have money. Yet again I would hate for that poor girl to fall for you and then your family make her feel like crap. I think you should give it a shot anyway! Which will make you happier in 20 years living in your big house on the hill with the person that makes you very happy or living in the house on the hill with a royal bitchthat you just married because your family approved. You never know this girl could be working her way through college and could someday meet up to your familys stupid standards. If your family truly loves you they will understand if you sit them down and talk to them about it!!!

Dude! This is every woman's dream! To be swept off her feet by a rich prince charming! Trust me, if she knows you are rich and your GRAND dad is rich... she's going to want everything from you! That means you have the 'power' to do what you want her to! But, with all due respect, treat her kindly.

There will be compromises on the way but for starters... take the risk.. and forget about 'class' for one moment or what your family would think of her.

Let me tell you a story. My gf's parents didn't want me to date their daughter. That was because I wasn't 'classy or rich' enough. She isn't rich but her parents (who are financially wealthy/stable) want her to 'marry up'. Another factor was... I am yellow. That put a financial/racial strain on me because society stereotype men to be the 'provider' and same race. This often caused pressure and confusion.

It makes you question why a lot of people conform to society's stereotypes. marry same race, same class, same wealth, etc.

That's my two cents to ya. For those who struggle always speak out. We have our fair share of ups and lots of downs.
Consider yourself lucky and at all cost... protect that supermarket girl! She's going to want your protection. Treat her like a princess... period.

how old are you? if you are a man then why would you care if you dont need them financially?...the only rift here is the one you are gonna have with yourself when you look back and ask what might have been...if you let your family control your purse strings as well as your crotch you are in for a long and lonely life...be a man and make up your own mind about who to date

Life is too short to keep pretentiousnesses in place. Date the girl. If you're parents don't like it, explain it to them; that you love them and don't want to cause problems for them but that you really like the girl.

That's what it's all about.

If asking the girl out would make you happy, then do it. Focus on making yourself happy instead of making your family happy. If a relationship with this girl does cause a rift with your family, I think they will eventually accept it. They are your family, after all.

The best way to show you don't share their pretentiousness is to strike up a relationship with this girl. She may be the best thing for you.

Well, I would make sure that a relationship is even possible with this girl. You could be misinterpreting her glances.. She could be married! But, if it turns out that she does like you, I would follow your heart.
