Try drinking Chamomile Tea; it works for me; if that doesn't work put it on a station in which politicians are debating. Good Luck!

I used to be an insomniac... now only occasionally do I have a problem getting to sleep. I can only say what's worked for me or not, but it's all different for everyone.
I find that I cannot sleep on an empty stomach. It's not good for the body in terms of weight management and metabolism, but neither is not sleeping. Try foods that are healthier like fresh fruits or vegetables. Or try one or two crackers since they'd be more filling.
I've tried countless relaxation techniques. None have helped me sleep, but maybe they'd work for you? Look up 'progressive relaxation.' It's a technique to relax the body by tensing and relaxing a muscle or two at a time. You could also try breathing techniques. Those two make the most sense when sleep is the goal. There is also the use of imagery or imagination to produce calming visual images. It's also called visualization. I linked to the article for 'relaxation techniques' at Wikipedia below.
The last resort is medication. If you watch tv in the US surely you've seen all the ads for Ambien and the like. But there is another one that people don't seem to know about. Trazodone. It's an antidepressant, but like many other meds can be used for other things. It has a 'slowing' effect, and therefore can aid in the sleep process. And I wouldn't be suprised if it was cheaper than Ambien. It's under $13 for 30 100mg pills (generic) without insurance (that may vary by pharmacy). There's a link below to trazodone on drugs.com.
Good luck sleeping!!

do you really want to know, then here goes,
no watching anything on the T.V
no reading books, drinking coffee, alcohol, no smoking, no eating, before you go to bed. Don't nod off during the day.

relax, listen to soft music, light lavender candles in a darken room, do this for about 10 mins before going to bed, it does work.

PS remember to blow out the candles before going to bed. Having sex before sleep is definitely fine.

I read somewhere that warming your head with a hairdryer will send you to sleep.

make passionate love right before, or have raunchy hardcore
_ _ _!!!!! right before.

OR just try and relax and have some down time before you go to bed so that your body and mind have a chance wind down.

Or get your doctor to prescribe you something or go to Walgreen's and pick up some Tylenol sleep caps
