Is it up to the owner if the dog if a postman is bitten?
Especiall when there is a clear sign dictating that dogs live in the property and a post box clearly attatched to the front of the house away from any dogs?

No, you are liable if he gets bitten. He can even "mace" your dogs if he feels threatned. I would recommend having a very secure fenced in area that is away from your mailbox or keeping them indoors. You could get sued something awful!

The owner is responsible for their dog wether it be the postman, the ups man, or the next door neighbor.

Most cities or towns where you live have certain restrictions on how many times a dog can bite a person & how they treat them.

As far as the question, yes they are insured. If the postman gets attacked & bitten on the route it will be treated as a on the job injury.

It's interesting that you asked this, because in my local Sunday newspaper, there was an article regarding dog attacks (pit bulls, inparticular).

Yes, there was a postman that was injured by a dogbite, and the owner was charged. The poor guy said that he was now a "prisoner in his own home" because of the incident. And, there was another one (postman) that said that she always had called her husband to meet her in front of an address because she didn't trust a certain dog. So, it's probably a nationwide problem.

you are clearly responsible if a postman gets bitten by your dog . and most likely the post office will contact your homeowners insurance and your insurance will go up and so will that of your neighbors next time they renew.

Your homeowner's insurance (or if you don't have any, you are liable) must pay for it. It's unlikely that a sign designating that you have a dog will help.
