Unfit means not being able to do the things that are consider normal and healthy for someone your age, size and gender. Factor as weight, heart rate, oxygen intake, bone density, amount of fat, cholesterol, etc. are taken into consideration to determine if someone is withing the normal limits or not.
Fit is someone who is within the normal limits considered for his/her age, gender, and size.
Fitness (as unfitness) degrees vary. Someone can be properly fit, but fat away from the performance of elite athletes. Nobody needs to have the qualifications of a class athlete to be consider fit. Many times class athletes stress so much their bodies that they may stand in the unfit section of what is consider normal and healhty.
To improve one fitness do the following:
Eat healthy and what you need (not all you want, or less that what you need)
Eat accordingly to age, gender, and activity level.
Exercises; both cardio and muscle building exercises.
Just a couple of hours a week are needed.
Rest properly.

unfitfor me =not being able to walk up the 5flights of stairs at work without gasping for breath. When I know I ca't do it then i should get back to the gym and do some cardio, is a continual thing though - i tend to stop and start my spats of fitness u should try having like 1 or 2 times a week where you have something regular to go whether it be walking/jogging around the park on a sunday morning, or swimming....everyone is different just find something that works for you, good luck x

If your body is free from anything like diseases,being on a reasonable weight,eating properly the right food at the right time,sleeping well,no stress,thats what i call fitness. you can improve your fitness by exercising,avoiding stress, eating the right meals. Being unfit is when you suffer from any disease,when you are overweight or weight is very low,when you are not eating properly,suffering from stress or any related to it,failing to get sleep and failing to do some exercises

Unfit to me means: not using your body and mind to it's optimal capacity; becoming lazy ~ your mind and body not fitting into a life where you can move and act at your best.
To improve your fitness, move enough to get your heart rate increased and eat less sugar, artificial stuff, go mostly for fruits and veggies. Find and do something that makes you happy.

There are 5 kinds of fitness, and I can remember 3: Aerobic fitness, flexibility and strength.
The first one is arguably the most important. Promoting aerobic fitness and cardiovascular fitness helps to prevent heart disease.

unfit for me means 10lbs over weight (150lbs) or when i pants are getting to tight. i just quit drinking soda, cut my bread intake, no fast food, more water, and i start walking
