Is it a subtle (or even not-so-subtle) defeatist way of looking at the world? It is bloodlust? Is it pure ego-faction? why why why...? you give me ideas in the form of 'answers'.

I think it is the fascination in the eternal struggle between good and evil.

I don't think there's much value in a 'hearty desire'. But there is in a willingness to fight with all you have for truth when the time comes. Final battle isn't only referring to physical battle it will also be a battle of words, beliefs, good choices and evil choices.

Lots of people blame religion for all or even most wars. Logically and sensibly speaking this statement doesn't work.
People cause wars. Not religion. What about war for power? What about land? What about dominance? What about supremacy? (World War 2[and most others])

The only reason there is going to be a final battle is because hateful beings are going to attack anyone who doesn't think like them. And those who are being attacked will either have to become slave, die etc. or fight back.

Jesus is going to take his people to heaven while His Father sends His wrath on those that are left. Born again believers will not see the Battle of Armageddon until the very end when they return with Jesus as Jesus defeats the armies at Armageddon and sets up His kingdom on earth.

Armageddon is not near as severe as the plagues that come before that, where the things necessary for survival become extremely limited, and yet death will evade many of them.

Armageddon comes from Har Megiddo. It referrs to the valley of Megiddo, or the Jezreel valley.

When the Earth moves, it will open the doors to the spirit worlds. There are many worlds that exist along with the Earth. But when the polluted powers generated by this world reach the heavens. As Revelation says. Our Creator will put a stop to it.

It is to make people feel better that there's some great "reckoning" in the end.

In fact, many scholars think that Revelation was written out the hope by early Christians that a vengeful God would destroy the Roman Empire.

No, it's hope that good will prevail over evil (as it always has).

And actually, there's no such thing as Armageddon. It's an invented word that we use for the end of times, occuring at Tel Megiddo in Israel. There is actually no such word used in the Bible, or Hebrew language

The old survival of the fittest teaching. Patrick Henry shouted it "Give me liberty or give me death."
