I mean, really.... we hear a lot about the Golden Rule and how everyone should follow it. But don't you think that masochists should not follow the Golden Rule? I mean if they do unto others as they would have done to them.... well... would that really be good?

Maybe we should change the Golden Rule to "do unto others as those others would like to have done unto them." That way, you only do unto others what THEY want, not what you want.

If you think of masochists as seeking pleasure (the fact that they do so through pain is secondary) then the Golden Rule still holds. A masochist would realise that pain is not a source of pleasure for most people, and so they would not be treating others appropriately by hurting them.

I actually always interpreted the Golden Rule more subtly than to literally do unto others. I mean I love olives on my pizza but my friend does not. So doing onto others as I would like done to me means I order one half with olives and the other without. Because I would want someone to do for me what I would actually like if I didn't share their preferences. So I am still doing onto others as I would like them to do for me, I am taking their wishes and feelings into consideration.

Maybe, and only maybe, if people treated masochists according to the golden rule, masochists would change.

Masochism only effects such a small population of people that it's really not an issue.
