Here's your answer, DON"T USE AUTO UPDATES!!!! That's why I never use it, every once in a while I'll do checks myself. So with that said let's move on to curing the problem. First thing that you want to do(i'm assuming your on XP) is go into your Security Center and disable the automatic updates. If you don't want to see the annoying balloon pop up anymore telling you that its auto updates isn't set, just go to the left of the security Center screen and there is something that says change the way windows alerts me(or something like that) click on that and uncheck whatever you don['t want to be bothered with anymore. Then you're done. Go and do the updates manually its faster, safer and a whole easier.

First of all, you should check out Microsoft Windows Update site at the first link below. From there it should be able to tell you whether your auto updates have been doing anything at all. Download all of the recommended updates and go from there.
Second it sounds like there is a problem with your automatic update application environment. Go back to the first link below and once the page loads, look on the right hand corner of the screen. There should be a little section off to the side with the title "Help Protect Your PC". This thing has to do with automatic updates. If the button says Turn on Automatic Updates", then you have a virus. If the button says "Turn off Automatic Updates", click the button and let Microsoft sort out the problems with your PC.
If none of the above has helped you, call: 1-800-936-3500 and ask to talk to an operator at the first chance you get. They should be able to help you out. Live phone support is free to users of Genuine Microsoft products for 90 days from the first time of contact. Visit the second link below to find out more about Microsoft Tech. Support.

i reckon u should the off the auto update completely and download neccessary updates from the microsoft website.
u can do this by go to: my computer > right click > properties> automatic update >choose: turn of automatic updates.
however, the icon will still popup in the task bar. u can get rid of it by click on it and choose 1 of the 3 options on the right left top hand side.

I have this problem too. It doesn't appear if you use fully automatic or download but don't install. If you do nothing with your computer when you logon, it often finishes correctly
You are being subtly coerced to comply with the standard. You can still do a manual windows update if you need to.

That is normal behaviour, it is trying to connect to the updates server to check for new updates, even though they only issue updates once a month now.

Try re setting your settings again and then do a restart. I find that if I do not do a restart then the computer sometimes does not update.
