There are two types of breath test. One is used by the police at the roadside for screening purposes. The detector system is a fuel cell. The second is the substantive breath testing performed back at a police station. Neither of these tests will be influenced by any painkillers or sleeping tablets that you are taking. There is one qualification to add. That is I assume that you are not taking these tablets with an alcoholic nightcap or that they are not prepared in a liquid form that contains alcohol.
There is a problem however. These drugs can effect your ability to drive and dangerously so if taken even with a small amount of alcohol. Clearly, if you have a breath alcohol level under the legal limit then you cannot be charged with being above the legal limit. But if the police have reason to believe you were under the influence of drugs then a blood sample would be taken. At court, your alcohol level would be taken into account along with the results of drugs tests. Note that you would have had to give a blood sample so if you haven't then there can be no testing fro drugs. Currently, you cannot detect drugs in a person's breath.
Finally, you should have been given a print out of any substantive breath testing at the time of the test (in the UK). If not then the correct procedure has not been followed and it could be possible for your solicitor to use this if you are charged.

I'm going to differ with everyone. Though I have never learned specifically the answer to this question there is one thing which can happen. Depending on what medications you are taking can interfere with the rate of absorption and cause more alcohol to remain in the bloodstream than there would be otherwise since the mechanism which breaks down alcohol may be tied up with the breakdown of the medications.
When taking more than one medication this is what can happen. It's often why two medications can work better than one and why painkillers and sleeping pills combined with alcohol is a leading cause of accidental overdose. The levels are higher in the system than they are alone and each takes longer to metabolize.

Shouldn't be. If you are taking sleeping pills or pain killers they will slow your reactions down and so if you have been drink driving then you are more likely to get caught which is why they dont recommend driving or operating machinery when taking sleeping pills.
If you've been arrested and you saw a doctor whilst in custody for drink driving he/she may have conducted a reaction test which is basically touching the doctors finger in a variety of different positions at a given speed.
If you've failed this the police may also bring this up in court and if you were on prescribed drugs this may help in your defence.

the breathalyzer is a controlled and calibrated infared breath test that measures the amount of alcohol in your blood or (b.a.c.). i dont believe pain killers or sleeping medicines would influence the test. that said, the sleeping pill or any other medication you take that may make you drowsy (antihistamines for example) would probably enhance the effects of your impairment and reduce your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and then preform well on field sobriety tests.
