hi i was in school 2day and as i left my class a pain shot up through my hip area this continued every time i walked was wondering if anyone had an idea what this could be and is it serious enough to require an appointment with my gp

Almost guarenteed to be a pinched nerve (usually by muscles) listed by a few others already.

If you are not getting satisfaction from your gp or if you are looking to find a better way - I use a chiropractor (to make sure the alignment of bones is correct) and a massage therapist (to apply enough pressure to the knots when I would recoil)

Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas (natural muscle relaxers) daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.

Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.

The cure - start with a professional massage, (if this does not do it you probably need a chiropractor as well) you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).

It sounds just like sciatica to me. I 'slipped' a disc in my back when I was 16 which caused the same problem. This is when a disc between your vertebrae pops and the jelly inside aggrivates your sciatic nerve. Normally this will repair itself without too much problem but you should get a check with your doctor expecially if the pain begins to move down your leg. If it is your disc, it should normally clear up in 2 - 7 days.

If you are offered physiotherapy, take it. You can also see an Osteopath who can make sure your skeleton is straight and alighned.

this could be your sciatic nerve. Mine acted like that when I was pregnant with my second child. It was very painfull and I would even fall. Before you spend all that cash on the doctor try this simple exercise at home to see if it gives you a little releif. Lay on your back with knees up feet flat on bed or floor. This works better if someone can help you, put a fist between your knees and squeeze as hard as you can without it hurting, then you go to two fist and repeat then to a forarm and repeat then go back down to one fist. I have used pillows when I was by myself. There is something in this execise that helps releave the pressure on the nerve. You can do the exercise several times if it works. If this does not help then by all means go see your doc!

Sounds like it could be sciatica. Very common but you need to see a GP.

Anytime that a person has pain such as yours it makes sense to have it checked out by a gp.

could be sliped disc or heriated disc the earlier you get it checked out the better off youll be physical theapy works early on be careful untill you get it checked out herniated discs can be painful especially in the lumbar area,lower back good luck,feel better
