Hi!
In my experience, only go to the gym if you don't have to pay for 6 months in advance, if you can really afford it (especially if you end up never going) or if you know that you'd definitely have the time and motivation to join the gym.
Some people (myself included) find the gym very intimidating. Aside from that, you have to queue for equipment (which is all sweaty after other people have used it!) and you may not like being around all the other people. Alternatively, some people love the environment and you might do too.
I personally prefer to excercise at home. If you think this might be for you, go to argos.co.uk and have a look at their equipment. If you have the space (i.e. a space room) you could even buy a treadmill or exercise bike for less than £100. A mini-trampette will burn lots of calories as will a stepper. The Lateral Thigh Trainer gets you sweating and counts the calories you've burned off as you go along (see link). It only costs £30.
Unless you feel like being at the gym will give you good motivation, I'd start off by working out at home. Then you could join a gym when you've lost some weight and need to work on shaping up your muscles.
I hope this helps :-)
xx Emmie

It depends on your budget. If you can afford it, I say go for it. If you cant, you could do it without the gym.
In the winter, buy an exercise DVD and use that. I've been renting one from the library and it works wonders. In the spring, take a jog around the neighborhood for an hour a few days a week.
The best thing about the gym, if you can afford it, is that you have a nice mixture of workouts, both classes and on the machines and you have to pay for it monthly, so you may as well use it.

Good on you for the goal. Gyms are good but as i found really exp. Maybe try and find a state gym with cheaper prices or really look around for other things that can help. other classes. going for a long walk. wrap up warm and when you get to the end of the walk reward yourself with a magazine or something. that way you gota reason to walk. hope it helps!

no save your money, you should loose the weight 1st then join the gym when you can look at yourself in the mirror without grimacing, as thats pretty much all you'll be doing at the gym anyway

Join yoga classes, the Indian way to keep body & mind in a good shape. If you join for 3-6 months, you can do it in your house/apt also. Gyms are costly 'coz that needs so many costly gym articles and hence fat fees to join a gym.

Well, the act of joining is not going to get you anywhere. You will still have to work up the motivation to actually go & work out. Can you get a 30-day trial membership? That way you can see if it suits your schedule and if the instructors are worth that kind of money.
