I live in a very, very small place. It's just not responsible to have a dog here. I was thinking of volunteering or something and the SunnySide Dog Kennels in Wolverhampton. Anyone know anything about it? Or volunteer in kennels? Whats it like? Do think there are any other options besides keeping one here? I've always had dogs but now living here it depresses me that I can't have one.

Thanks for the answers guys, I really wish I could have a dog here, even sneakly but your not allowed. And Id have to sneak it up and down the apartment steps and make sure no one saw it. I wish I could though.

As to the person that said "if your a real dog lover do what the dog needs" I'd like to ask them to re-read the question and see that I know I can't have one responsibly so I wanted to help in kennels. Thanks.

That sounds great to volunteer!!!

The thing is you are going to find your homeless pet that doesn't need much room. Wants to lay around and watch you do your daily activities and go for an occasional long walk to smell the flowers. If you are allowed to have pets even if it is a small place there is one waiting for you.

Be happy don't get upset he's looking for you. Waiting for you to realize you have everything he needs. I do rescue and I have several dogs that don't need much. I see people decide they don't want the dog when its seven years old. Thats the prime of their life the puppy stage is gone they just want to chill out and enjoy their senior years and who better to spend it with than someone eager to love them like you.

Sunnyside Kennels at Coven are a part of the Birmingham Dogs Home and we have had several dogs from them over the years. I have always been impressed with them and I'm sure they would welcome new volunteers. Alternatively you could advertise a dog walking service in your local paper shop or get in touch with your local vicar or priest to see if there are any old or infirm people in the parish who could do with a dog walker. I would advise volunteering for animals who really need you rather that volunteering at a commercial kennel just to make the owners more money. Best of luck in your search, I really know how much you can miss the company of dogs....Allan.

Working in kennels is pretty tough and can be really heartbreaking.I ran kennels for a few years and volunteering can be hard to get into, but if you don't manage to get volunteer work you could try advertising a dog walking buisness. It would allow you to become attatched to the dogs without the risk of bonding then losing them to new homes, plus it would help out the owners and you might even make a few quid!!

I volunteer at The retired Greyhound Trust in Featherstone nr Cannock. It's the most rewarding experience ever! I love animals so much that i thought i wouldn't be able to work in kennels without getting emotionally invoved, but the beauty of The RGT is that the dogs have never known anything but kennel life, so they are very happy there! (Not as happy of course as when they're homed & have a fire to curl up in front of...). The people are lovely & make you feel very welcome! Greyhounds are such endearing dogs the only problem you would have is not been able to take one home! But i think it's lovely of you to concider volunteering as a benefit for you & it goes without saying a benefit to the dogs! It's very hands on, we groom the dogs, feed & water them, change their beds & clean out their kennels. We show propective owners round & answer their questions (so get to learn alot about Greys). We also excersise & best of all make a fuss of all the dogs! (& there's always a drink & a few bickies in it for us). i got into it by e-mailing the kennels... Have a squiz at the website www.rgtmonmore.co.uk
Wherever you go to i wish you all the best & have fun!

Sunnyside is quite a nice place. My friend rehomed 2 strays from them last year. They usually seem busy, taking in most of the strays in the Wolves/Staffs area so could probably do with an extra pair of hands.

Give them a ring and see what they suggest. Or see if there is a possibility of you branching out into Dog Walking. Good luck hon, I had to give my dog up too a few years back when I moved to a smaller flat and the council wouldn't let me keep her. I still miss her now.

i don't live any where near you . i am in Canada. i can tell you that you would seem like an angel or saint to the dogs in the kennels the pound if you were to go there and walk them .
you might get really good at this and be able to correct a poorly raised dogs misbehavior and so save its life. i
also know i was stuck in bed unable to walk for one entire year not a foot on the floor. somehow i have no idea how a woman learned of me and came each day a few times and took my dog for walks and swims and plays. i thank god for that woman . she was a illegal massage parlor woman but to me she was a saint. oh i never took advantage of her occupation skills.
good luck finding a great use for your time.

Do you have a local dogs home? They are always looking for volunteers and think of the satisfaction that Will give you helping dogs who have no-one else to care, they always need a bit of attention.
