Mostly because they feel they need to, because they have to either communicate with the rest of the world or be competitive once in the job market (which is part of a vicious circle in many cases). Then, you can learn a foreign language to know another culture, read literature and get a new way of thinking.

I learned Spanish to be able to communicate with my family in Mexico. I also find learning foreign languages fascinating and essential in the modern world. I would like to learn a third language.

Well, for me it`s really easy to explain this: I, for example, live in Romania, and, therefore, I speak the Romanian language. Have you heard of it? No, I don`t think so. That`s why we have to learn different languages: because I can`t speak Romanian with many people of the planet, so I have to learn some other languages in order to make myself understood. And somewhere about 70% of the world population has exactly the same problem as mine. And this is why we must learn languages.
