Do it right, and you deaden the nerve endings and you can get used to powerful punching without feeling the hurt and without suffering from arthritis. Do it wrong and you have 2 clubs for hands that aren't useful for daily life. Don't overdo it as you still need your hands to grab an opponent.

Bones that are broken/fractured then allowed to heal sure become larger but they also become calcified and even more brittle. Many karate practitioners practice this breaking of hand bones. The calcified bones also allow less movement in the joints and contribute to painful arthritis later in life.

they start to look like crap.

you would do better to toughen your wrist through strength training, and practice good form in punching. a decent hit will knock a guy down, without this the need for tough knuckles.

I never really cared if my knuckles got sore, a long as I made the hits count.

what is your focus?
maximum damage to opponent, or reduced damage to yourself?
is not a put down at all, but you should focus more on landing perfect hits. a crap strike will injure your wrist, and that pain is worse that knuckle pain.
forget the pain of sore hands. only afterwards do you feel the pain. so focus on technique and speed, and slowly work into power.

I use palms or chops now, and theres no pain at all now, with all of the benefits of fists. plus, you dont look like you were involved, because you dont have swollen knuckles.

if you weigh up the pain and damage factors, for each head punch (for example), there is more pain going into the face than the knuckles. so you win as long as you keep hitting him. fighting is painful, but if your pain is less, then all is good.

When you Toughen your Knuckles, you feel real TOUGH, I'm telling you man, you'll love it ... But you gotta be careful, and know what your doing when you put your power in the punches and hit whatever your using to toughen your fist, because it takes a real man to take that kind of pain the the knuckles, and it's not pretty at all !

Yes the skin hardens and yes you deaden the nerves. You also strength the bones in the hand and the wrist though. No one said that one. Whenever you strike hard enough you'll bruise the bones and minutely fracture the bone tissue structure (picture a honeycomb sponge type tissue being compressed and squashed) So the bone tissue rebuilds itself which as we all know heals stronger than before. When you hit correctly it compresses the bones in the hand and the carpals in the wrist. Over time your bones in your hand become harder as well as the skin and nerves.

da,

What 'toughening' the knuckles usually entails is to thicken the skin by developing calluses...this can be accomplished 2 ways...mechanically, by striking progressively rougher surfaces until you develop the calluses you need, or chemically where you apply a given solution on your knuckles and it irritates the skin to develop the calluses.

Some folks use both...

Along with developing calluses, one also conditions the nervous system by again, striking progressively harder objects until you 'get used to' the pain.

They get a lil bigger and harder from repeated strikes and are less prone to breaking.

they are harder. but the reason why it is, is becuase you are killing the nervous in your hands which means you cant feel the pain as much.
