the standard groin guard covers the area below the waist and not just the groin. basically a punch below the belly button is illegal and is protected against. making groin shots illegal is understandable but why are stomach shots not allowed? surely muscles should be adequate protection as they are in the upper stomach above the waist.

Boxers are just maximising their low blow protection by pulling up their shorts high. I think that's understandable.

Belly Punch Boxing

I've been boxing for 4 years now, I don't think I've ever really considered it a tool for self defence, other than the ability to evade boxing is surpassed by most other martial arts in effectiveness on the street. Now obviously an experienced boxer won't lost to some wimp off the street. Now as a boxer you can take a punch better than most people and you can certainly deal one out too, so in a fight boxing is useful but more so if you're the one swinging first, getting kicked is no fun. It also depends on the type of boxer you are; if you're an in fighter who just rushes in and goes for the KO then you'll probably have a fair chance in an encounter, but I think out boxing would be more effective in a street fight.

Punches to the stomach are allowed in boxing, hitting below the belt is illegal. The ref usually tells the fighters just prior to the start of the fight how much of "pulling the trunks up over the waist line" they got away with by defining where he will call the low blows. Fighters try for the highest waistline they can to minimize the target area for a body shot, but refs know this, hence the traditional (on camera) pointing out of legal and low area on each fighters waist.

What the hell are you talking about. As long it is over the belt line which should be level with the belly button it is a legal hit. But remember I said beltline. Most fighters to give themselves more protection will in fact pull them up a few more inches which kind of makes the target area smaller. When a referee deems the shot is to low then its the referee who makes the call and the mistake, but a shot to the stomach is a legal blow. But does the referee see it as legal that would be the question.

It is based on the position of a boxer's trunks...above or below the belt. It is more about hip bones and not belly buttons

the stomach area is soft and not protected by bones. A hard hit can rupture your stomach or spleen and if this happens you can bleed internally to death within a few mintues.
