Just been weighed in Boots on one of those machines that measures everything. It gives me my height and weight but the it starts on about my BMI can anyone explain in plain english what this is and how to understand it. Also there is a body fat which is in % and then a body fat mass in kg? again can anyone explain exactly what they are measuring etc. I'm training at the gym quite a lot so didn't want to just go on my weight as I'm probably gaining muscle, so can anyone tell me which one I should be looking at each week to see if I have lost weight?? sorry but I'm really confused!! thanks very much.

I think the BMI is calculated using weight against height and whether you are male or female. I think anything over 30 is considered unhealthy. Boots should be able to give you more of an idea on this.

Body mass index is just a mathematical calculation based on your height and weight. The equation is:

BMI = weight/height^2 x 703

They claim a BMI under 25 is good, a BMI of 25-30 indicates overweight, and a BMI over 30 is obese. It's not very accurate though. George Foreman has a BMI well over 25 and he's in VERY good shape.

Body fat % is simply that: how much of your body is fat. There are many different ways to measure it like electronic scales, skinfold calipers, submersion tanks, etc. Bear in mind electronic scales are not very accurate and skinfold caliper measurements are only as good as the person taking them (if they don't really know what they're doing they can be WAY off) and submersion is very expensive. General rule of thumb is men should be under 20% body fat and women should be under 25% body fat. If you want to see serious muscle definition in your body, especially in your abs, your body fat usually needs to be below 10% if your a man and below 12% if you're a woman.

Body fat mass is the weight of your body fat in pounds or kilograms. For example, a man who weighs 200 pounds and has a body fat measurement of 15% has a body fat mass of 30 pounds (200 x 0.15).

BOTTOM LINE: The scale doesn't tell the whole story. If you're doing strength training it's possible for you to go for months at a time without losing any weight on the scale, but what's actually happening is you're losing fat weight and gaining muscle weight. Don't get too wrapped up in all these different measurements unless you have a trainer or know someone who can measure your body fat percentage for you. Instead, keep track of your progress using a scale and a seamstress' tape measure. Use the tape measure to measure your neck and waist at the very least, but you can also use it to measure your arms, legs, chest, etc. As you lose fat, your waist measurement should go down and your neck measurement may go down a bit too. If you're doing strength training your chest, arms, and legs should get bigger.

Good luck!

BMI (Body Mass Index) is way of calculating your weight in relation to your height and body type (large, medium or small frame). A higher than average number generally means the person is obese; but it's not always accurate if the person is an athlete or more muscular than average (muscle weighs more than fat).

Whether body fat is measured in kg (kilograms) or % (percentage) are two different things and it has nothing to do with the type of body fat. Percentage of body fat would probably be a better way to calculate obesity if the person is very muscular.
If someone was able to figure out his or her total body fat amount in kg (or pounds) they would have to divide that by their total weight in kg or pounds and multiply by 100 and you would have the percentage of body fat.

For example; person is 200 pounds and has 50 pounds body fat. 50/200 = 0.25 x 100 = 25%.
It would work the same way with kilograms, but the amount of fat and total body weight would both have to be in kilograms to come up with the percentage.

BMI is Body Mass Index. It tells you if you are in the correct weight range considered healthy for your height and basically it tells you which weight categorey you are in (Normal, Overweight Obese etc) You should be in normal.
Body Fat % tells you if you have an acceptable amount of body Fat or if you have a high or too high % for your age.
If you have just been given the figures then this is not of much use to you. TYou need to see the charts so you can tell where you are.

Body Mas index: relation between the total weight of the body and the height.

Fat percent: Your total weight is divided in lean mass and fat mass. The percent of fat mass means: if your total mass is 100%, how much of it is fatty

Fat weight in kg: Simply how much kg of fat you have.

Gym should make the fatty percent and the fatty weight decrease, even if the lean mass increases and the total weight does not change much.

BMI = Kg/m2, i.e. your weight in kilos divided by your height in metres squared.
The results are:-
0-19 underweight
20-25 normal
25.1-29.9 overweight
30+ obese
