I'm trying to find a program that will allow me to experiment with my photos by changing backgrounds, cropping images, adding text,etc.. I don't know much about doing this so please keep simplicity of use in mind when making a recommendation. Don't get me wrong, I want a good program, one that will allow me to do some cool stuff with my pics, it just needs to be user friendly. Thanks in advance.

I would go to Cnet downloads at :
http://www.download.com/?tag=hd_ts
Then in the search box type "photo"
it will bring up a whole lotta programs for you to choose from. They have a lot of free trial versions , which is good because you can try it out and see how you like it before you buy. They also have so many different programs you might want to try a few and compare before you buy anything. They have some more well known products like Corel paint shop pro, but they also have simpler programs for people just starting out.
They also sometimes have freeware, which is totally free..it's not gonna compete with photoshop, but sometimes they have some fun stuff. Since you're downloading it from Cnet, you don't have to worry about downloading a virus or adware.
What i find helpful is reading the user reviews. It gives me an idea if it' s a program I can use.
Hope this helps.

Photoshop Elements. It provides a mix of the best/most popular tools found in the full version of Photoshop, but for a fraction of the price.

If you think you might continue working with photo editing beyond novice, then you might as well start out by learning the basics of Photoshop (via Elements), so that if you do become more proficient at it, then moving up to the full Photoshop won't be too overwhelming.

If this doesn't interest you, then Picasa is a nice easy-to-use photo editing/managing/sharing program.

I started with ROXIO Photosuite and it was really easy to learn and reasonably priced Everyone will tell you that ADOBE Photoshop is the best and it probably is but for a beginner it's a little tough to learn and a little pricey
And for all the FREE downloads, remember "you get what you pay for"

Use GIMP it is open source and freeware. It is like photoshop, and since it is free, it is worth it. very reliable.
