My dog has been sick recently and the veterinarian recommended I give him boiled chicken. I'm going to buy some bone-in breasts.
I've never boiled chicken before. How long do you cook it and how do you know when it's done? I don't want risk giving him under-cooked chicken.

Don't worry, I wasn't planning on giving him the bones.

If you're using boneless chicken breasts, then boil for about 5 minutes . If you're not sure they're done, simple cut into one of them and see . Do not cut into them if you're cooking for yourself or others, because the juices will run out and it'll be dry !!
EDIT* - I just noticed that you said 'bone-in' . That requires much more time . I'd say about 20 minutes . Thanks .

Bring a pan of water to the boil, then add the chicken breasts, when the water has come to the boil again, turn the heat down to a very gentle simmer and cook for 15-20 minutes. To check its done, cut through the thickest part of the breast and it should be white all the way through. If you see any pink just cook it for another 5 mins and check again.
I wouldn't give chicken bones to your dog as they might cause him to choke.

When a recipe calls for "diced, cooked chicken," I always boil it to cook it, so I'm an old pro at boiling chicken. :) Put your chicken in a dutch oven/stock pot with enough water to cover it by about an inch or so. Bring to the boil, reduce heat to simmer, and cook for about 45 minutes.
I hope your dog is feeling better soon. He's going to be in Heaven getting real meat every day with his dinner. Spoiled pooch! :)

depends on the size of the chicken breasts but usually 20-30 minutes. after cooking take the largest piece and cut close to the bone if not pink or bloody looking it is done. hope your pooch is feeling better.

Season it lightly with salt (dogs have taste buds too). Boil it until the meat falls off the bone .. about an hour .. keep skimming off any foam that comes to the top. Let it cool completely before feeding it to him.

Til it comes away from the bone easily. You don't want him to get hold of a bone; he could choke.
