My son is in nursery until 11:30am & is usually eager to get home (which involves a 20min. walk through woodland). In the past i have had to carry him as he has forgotton to go to the toilet before hometime. Now that I have started back to work, a group of mums + myself take it in turns to walk the kids home on our days off. Today walking home with my sons friend & his mum the other boy needed the loo, which my friend let him do against a tree. My son seemed interested in this but i'm unsure of whether to let him if he needs to?
What are your opinions on this - should i let him or isnt it a good idea?

I think it's harmless if it's in an uninhabited and unowned area (as long as it's not private property). I'm the mom of two boys (3 and 5), and they find this kind of stuff fascinating. It's a boy thing, hard to understand as a woman, but they love it. I remember on a long drive, my older one had to go to the bathroom and there was no rest area or exits for miles. So I let him get out and go to the bathroom by the side of the road. He loved it - he couldn't stop talking about it - it was the highlight of his trip, lol.

Good luck, mom!

I will be honest I am not sure. I have the same problem with my son. We live in a country home, and my husband at times will just go out side if he is working in the barn or something. Sometimes when he has a group of guy friends over and they are hanging out side by the fire they will sneak off somewhere by the wood line and pee. So of course my son See's this and thinks it is cool to be like the "guys". Although when he is in our house, around other children or out and about with me we always go to the potty. So he might know the difference...I am not sure. But as long as you keep an eye on it and make sure that if a potty is available he is to use it....you will be fine.

Personally, when my son was that age(he's now 19) it was the only thing that kept him from having accidents while paying outside. Thankfully we lived out in the country and there were plenty of trees to choose from!

I'm smiling. It seems brown bears really do "you know what" in the woods, and so does your little son!! He is , after all , only three, and believe me, I know two little twins who, as of last week, were going poo poo next to a large ficus tree in their grammies living room!! I kid you not!! Just explain to your son that our "activites" in the bathroom are a private matter, that only our puppy dogs and kitties go outside, as a general rule. If the need is urgent, and sometimes it is for all of us, find a private spot in the woods, and remind him how much nicer it is at home in your very own potty. Tell him he might get a bug bite if he spends too much time in the woods or worse yet, poison ivy!! Don't forget to praise his efforts at home!

when my son was potty training we lived in a 2 story house it was nearly impossible sometimes for him to make it... you know how kids wait till the last second.. so he would go to the back door and stand on the step and let it go.... hes now 14 and no long term effects.............. another words heck yes its a boys right to pee out side thats why the can stand to do it

It is helpful to get them started but it could come back to get you in a few years. You're loading up the car at the grocery store and your son is saying he has to pee and you are saying he has to wait and the next thing you know some old lady in a benz is honking at you cuz your son is waving at her while peeing on the tire of SUV beside you. Good times!

Better than in his pants. But some freaks would cry your training him for indecent exposure acts later in life, but I think it's only natural. The pee is sterile and it's watering the tree. Just need to get rid of all the cry babies that wet themselfs over silly stuff.

LOL....that's how I potty trained my son!!!! We were always outside at the pool, and I didn't want him going in the water, and dragging him in the house every time was silly, so,,,,I would have him go behind the pool fence....Until the day he went at the vegetable stand with my mother...too funny....That's the advantage of their little squirt gun!!!

You should teach him that he needs to try and go at school, if this is allowed or try to wait until home. You don't want him to get in the habit of doing it against a tree in public.

well this sounds funny but that is how I got my son to potty train, If he couldn't make it up to the bathroom we just opened the back door and let him go.
