I've read that Muhammad had children & that it deems reasonable that his relatives lead Islam after his death. Is this the major controversary between the two? After so many decades after Muhammad's death, why haven't you been able to settle this? I am Catholic & follow the pope. Other Christians have broken off from the church & no longer follow the pope's authority. I know the brutual history of my religion, but today there is no longer violence between the many Christian sects. We are all God's children & all believe in Jesus is His Son. Being Catholic doesn't deem me better than anyone other Christian & I don't hurt or kill others becuz they aren't Catholic. I don't understand why Sunnis & Shiites are still fighting & killing after all these years? Why can't you live in peace among each other? Also, every Muslim that I have talked with online has said that Islam is a religion of peace & love. Yet every day on the news tells of killings by the two. Does Allah really say to kill?

Sunnis and Shi'ites live in peace in most places.

Its just in the war zones in Iraq, and a few other places.

But yes, they do seem to fight more than Christian factions.

I am also Catholic. Are you old enough to remember the fighting that used to be so bad in Ireland between Catholics and Protestants? The fighting was not really about religion. It was about land and a people's independence. In Ireland there was much violence between Catholics and Protestants, but in the rest of the world there was not. I am quite sure that in most cases what looks like a religious war is actually a war over something else. It does not appear to me the Sunnis and Shiites are at war against each other globally, just in Iraq where people are currently living in very extreme conditions.

Sunna is the first large group and Shia is the second largest denomination of the Islamic faith after Sunni Islam. Shias adhere to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H.) and the religious guidance of his family (who are referred to as the Ahl al-Bayt) or Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H.)'s descendents known as Shi'a Imams. Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H.)'s bloodline continues only through his daughter Fatima Zahra R.A. and her husband Ali ibn Abu Talib, who alongside the Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H.)'s grandsons are among the Ahl al-Bayt ("people of the house [of Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H.). Thus, Shi'as consider Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H.)'s descendents as the true source of guidance while considering the first three ruling Sunni caliphs a historic occurrence and not something attached to faith.

Differences of Shia and Sunni traditions
Because Islamic law is based partly on the hadith, Shia rejection of some Sunni hadith and Sunni rejection of some Shia hadith means that the versions of the law differ somewhat. For example, while both Shia and Sunni pray five times each day, some of the prayer times differ. Shia do not believe that there is a set time for As'r and Ish'a prayers, and therefore, they are prayed together with the Thu'hur and Mugrib prayers, respectively. Likewise, Shia do not perform non obligatory prayers like Tar'raweeh, which is prayed during Ramadaan.

Also another issue of difference between the sects is that Nikah Mut‘ah or "temporary marriage" which is not forbidden for the Shia because it is found in a number of Shia traditions that the practice is permitted. There are Sahih Shia traditions which maintain that mut'ah is forbidden but these are dismissed as they contradict other narrations on mut'ah which were deemed more acceptable. Many Shia discourage the practice of Mut'ah, but maintain that it is permissible.

The Shi'a persist in Tawassul, often directed to members of lineage of Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H.) such as Hazrat Ali R.A. and Imam Husayn R.A. or Shi'a imams or saints. The Salafi school of the Sunnis condemn this as Shirk In al-'Ebadah .

Finally, The differences are tolerable.. Even in christianity you'll find Arthodox, Catholic, etc... They're both Muslims..

The rage between the two parties is of political nature. and must be stopped for the sake of Islam and Humanity...

Allah Never orders to kill innocent people, Killing any "Soul" even an animal in the Quran for Hatered, playing, greed or racism, difference of view points or change of religion is severly punishable. No Human is entitled to kill another.

there is no war between Sunni and Shiites, the real war is between the agent of USA and the people who refused to be an agent.
so in Lebanon USA with Sunni, and in Iraq USA with Shiites from here come the conflict.
situation in Iraq is different, because Iran use its authority there make fight between Sunni and Shiites to threat USA by this conflict to increase its authority in Iraq to make this situation a card if USA thinking to attack Iran.
by the way there was a big war between catholics and Protestants in Scotland for years,it is ended now,but still the fanaticism between them in many occasions exist, the real example for that is in football league there are team for Protestant only and other for for catholics only,Celtic and rangers.
there are no real fight between human, the real fight is between the emperors and the small countries but this war take many faces

I grateful which you somewhat pick to be attentive to the particular motives. all reason you suggested at the instant are not appropriate. additionally, reason variety 3 is fake. there's no longer something in Islam called, kill your self and you gets 70 or seventy one virgins interior the heaven. it is in simple terms manipulation from the media and exceedingly interior the internet because of the fact continuously government pick to teach that those people are offender of their blood and our presence "american military" is so significant to furnish stability. Brother, it is politics. Whenver there is invasion from a united states of america to a various united states of america that fluctuate in cultural history, there could be violence. regrettably, US government it self performed an significant place in making chilly conflict between Sunna and Shia'a. additionally, Iran helped this place by skill of helping terrorist Shi'i company to kill sunnis. and US supported unknown terrorist organzation to kill sunni people. Then people get offended and start to kill one yet another. In Islam, in case you killed one harmless individual as in case you killed the great human type as suggested interior the Quran. yet you could safeguard your self from invadors. US military isn't welcomed in any respect and that's obligated Islamically on Iraqi people to combat the yank to get them in a foreign country. approximately 9/11, I even have in simple terms an question such as yours. first of all of the analyze of 9/11 replaced into stopped then you could no longer say somebody did it. 2d, assume Binladen have achieved 9/11, you could remeber Newston's 2d regulation which say "each action has reaction". Your government has achieved plenty against people residing interior the middle east. it is sufficient the help people government to the regimes in center east. people are suffering particularly in center east. Whoever did 9/11 it is faulty in Islam, it particularly is no longer allowed to kill harmless people despite the excuses. I choose you American pick somebody else beside Obama and McCain because of the fact the two will shop on with the written schedule by skill of the lobbies that administration the country. My maximum suitable needs for actual transformations which you will and could do
