You always need a permit no matter where you go to fish. Just buy the permit. Follow the law.

Most National Parks you are allowed to fish for free, some like Yellowstone require a permit to be legal. A day license is only $5 or so. That probably would be worth it to make your dad happy.

It depends a lot on where you live. Contact your state department of natural resources, or fish and wildlife commission or whatever you have that fills that role in your area and request information on fishing regulations. Here in Florida, if you're fishing saltwater, you don't need a license if you're fishing from the shore, a bridge, a dock, or any other structure "...permanently attached to land." or if you're wadefishing in less than 4 feet of water. I don't have any luck freshwater, so I don't know the regulations there..... All you gotta do is ask.

Check your state fishing laws. If you lived in Okla you can fish without a permit if you use a cane pole with one hook and natural bait. The line must be tied to the pole and no reel used.. It's the way a lot of us learned how to fish.

in Oklahoma you can fish on private property without a permit as long as the state does not stock the pond

In certain states they have free fishing weekends and such. I would contact your local DNR and see if your area offers one. Otherwise, I dont believe you need a permit on a private pond or lake, but I would look into that.

SCOTTISH SPORTING LAWS Please note that certain laws in England & Wales differ from those in Scotland. The following are set as a guideline only - exact rules and sporting etiquette can be obtained from the Estate/Ghillie/Agent. Fishing in Scotland Migratory fish (salmon) have a separate status from other freshwater fish. There is no public right to fish inland waters (including brown trout) in Scotland. Before starting to fish you must obtain a permit and adhere to the rules of that particular stretch of water. Where a Freshwater Protection Order exists it is a criminal offence to fish for brown trout and other freshwater fish such as grayling, pike, perch, rainbow trout etc without a written permit. The Order can limit the method of fishing permitted, eg fly or bait. It is illegal to fish for salmon or sea trout without the written permission of the proprietor. There is no Sunday fishing for migratory fish in Scotland. It is illegal to use natural shrimp or prawn bait in this area. Criminal prosecution and severe penalties are in force to protect this law. Kelts are protected by law and must be returned unharmed to the water. They can be caught in the Spring mistaking them for a clean fish. Your ghillie will help recognise these fish and advise what to do. The fine for fishing without a license or out of season (march to October) is currently £2,500
