I know a cake mix is pretty much just the dry ingredients in the cake like the flour, salt, baking soda/powder, etc. Is there any way I can substitute this in a recipe that calls for yellow cake mix?

Mevlana - thanks, but what is the yield of 1 18.25 oz. package yellow cake mix? I suppose I should look for a cake recipe that yields the same amount as the cake mix? Is there a standard yield?

Just take a yellow cake scratch recipe and use only the dry ingredients .

not sure what it is you're making. sometimes substituting for something else takes away the dish you planned on making.
Yellow cake mix has the flavour of lemon. I just made cupcakes the other day with a yellow cake mix* So i guess i would suggest , some lemon zest in your ingredients for your cake mix*
GOODLUCK*
