Just something that kind of interested me. I visited Mount Isa, Australia a while back and saw the mine there. The guide explained that they would drill holes into the rock in a set pattern, and fill them with explosives. These, when set off, would shatter the rock, the debris would be cleared, the proccess would be repeated, and slowly a tunnel through the rock would emerge. I was wondering if anyone knows how this method compares- in terms of speed- to the big tunnel boring machines, like they used to dig under the Channel from England to France.
Thanks!
