Just something that kind of interested me. I visited Mount Isa, Australia a while back and saw the mine there. The guide explained that they would drill holes into the rock in a set pattern, and fill them with explosives. These, when set off, would shatter the rock, the debris would be cleared, the proccess would be repeated, and slowly a tunnel through the rock would emerge. I was wondering if anyone knows how this method compares- in terms of speed- to the big tunnel boring machines, like they used to dig under the Channel from England to France.
Thanks!

in good material that will stand for a short time before needing timbering a boring machine is much faster than drilling and blasting. howere there is no average speed for either method due to the variable conditions of the soil and the different diameters of the tunnels. The only comparison that I can offer is that about 40 years ago I was associated with two tunnels of the same diameter and roughly the same
rock conditions. on a good shift the boring machine could get 100 feet a day while the drilling and blasting was less than half of that. The major differenc is that with the boring machine the muck is being transported out of the tunnel continuously without shutting down the maachine. The drilling and blasting must shut down while the muck is being removed. At least half of the time the drilling and blasting is waiting for the muck to be remover.

Well, you could use some Sousa stuff. If you want something cutesie you could do a Grunman piece. Or you could do something from the classical or romantic period. Can you give more information on your drill team's style? When are you performing it? If it's on the fourth of July you could do patriot music. The possibilities are endless, you just need to narrow your choices down by where and when you are performing it, what movements you are going to do, what kind of group you are etc.

try asking someone at Keiwitt Construction in the U.S. They are the tops here for tunnel drilling. I have friends who run rigs for them all over the U.S. They recruit heavily from my school
