I'm the proud owner of two male pitt bulls, their names are Capone and Junior. Why are they often confused as mean fighting dogs when they are actually gentle and great around adults as well as childern?

I believe in my area its because the druggies and trash own them. Then while they aren't paying attention to their little children and the dog has been isolated from children and only walking the streets with the crack heads someone gets hurt.

Then to top it off even though my Lhasa attacks viciously no one wants to report him but if a pit bites its blown extravagantly out of proportion. The government controls our media as we all know and they decide where to place our focus. Focus on this dog being bad children in an attempt to keep our children away from the druggies. Its a lot easier than actually arresting and watching the drug dealers get out of jail a few hours later.

Make society afraid of their pets. I make d*mn sure every one I ever see I stop and pet. I don't care what the a$$ holding the tow chain thinks. Every one with a puppy and they jerk it away from me I tell them your dog doesn't need to be jerked to listen to you. A pit responds much better to praise. I always hear that the dog is hard headed and then I throw in another two cents. It wouldn't be with praise training.

Pits are banned where I am so only the bad people have them. Sickening. I do truly wish they would either lift the ban so that decent law abiding families can experience the joy of one of the best breeds Ive ever encountered or uphold the ban and take them away from those that offer the dog no justice.

I just think this is cute. Its not the sad one its funny.

Does no one remember the little rascals. What other dog could you have placed with a bunch of kids on tv, What about cheaper by the dozen What other breed could you put with a dozen kids and the do exactly what they need to do.

I'm the proud owner of 6 wonderful Dobermans.. Pitts, as well as Rotts and Dobers just get a bad rap because of POOR breeding and POOR handling of the breed... I love my angels ( ages 5 years to 2 years) and its a shame that some folks are fearful of the " potential bad dogs".. When its really Bad Owners, NOT bad dogs. :) ANY creature-- Human or Otherwise is a Product of its Enviroment. If treated with diginity, love, diginified training and respect that all creatures deserve they will be loving, and protective. Any dog can be made a mean fighting dog.. ( LOL, the only dog I've ever been bitten by is a poodle ).. Congrads on your loving PittBulls- seems like they have a home most Pitts can only dream of. :) LOVE, the Doberman Gang...

I have ben around Pit Bull through firends, and yes these dogs were friendly and fun. But the Pit Bull has been inbred over the last few decades for fighting and this has hurt the bred. Along with the fact that they were bred for fighting originally and do not have to be provoked to protect the owner (look it up in the AKA history and facts). This inbreeding and the number of attacks on children that seemed unprovoked have caused many people to have the preception that Pit Bulls are a dangerous breed. It is not a misconception that Pit Bulls can be dangerous ask any ER nurse or doctor. And yes it does matter who the owners are, but even then can you be sure of what would provoke your dogs to defend you which is in their breeding?

Its a phase, dobermans were popular as nasty dogs and now its the pittbulls turn. Most of the bites that occur from pits are actually pit crosses or just happen to look like pits. There will be another nastier dog that will come along and take the popularity away from the pit as a mean dog. Such as the fighting dogs fila brasiliero, japanese tosa, carne corso, perro di presa canario and dogo argentino. Its just that these dogs are illegal to import into most countries (B.S.L) and if you could import them they would be expensive. Unfortunately its just the very popularity of the breed that makes their rep so bad. If you live in a town where there is 1000 pitbulls and pit crosses but only 100 labs and lab crosses, then there is obviously more of a chance of being bitten by a pit than a lab, just by the numbers not the temperment of the breed. 20 years ago it was rife the amount of rotti and dobe maulings but now pits are the dog of choice for irresponsible dog owners. You rarely ever hear of a dobe or rotti mauling any more. It just proves its the image of the dog and the idiots that own them, not the breed. Its sad because while i have never owned one but my husband has and in australia they are a restricted breed so his had to be muzzled in public and in a caged in run at home, it couldnt even have the run of the yard.

I too own a wonderful pit bull named Max. I always wanted to name a pit Capone..good choice. Any way, he is the best dog I have ever owned. I have raised him since he was 2 weeks old, and he will be 6 in May. He is funny, loving, protective, loyal, my companion. Plus is beautiful to look at. I truly love this dog.

Because of all the negitive publicity regarding Pitt Bull. Just this week there was another incident where a child was killed by the family's Pitt Bull. The breed strong jaws are deadly.

You know I absolutely agree with you. It's not the dog, it's the owner that raises them. Sure...pit bulls have the capacity to "snap", but so do ALL dogs. You never hear about those.....you hear about pit bulls, rottweilers, and doberman's...etc. You hear about these horrible attacks from these dogs on the news all the time...it's a scare tactic. They only want to show you what they want you to see. It's sad though,...these dogs that usually attack have been teased and tormented, by stupid foolish children who end up dying or injured, and then blame the dog. Most dogs who attack, don't do it out of no where, not all, but most. I'm sorry, but if someone was constantly picking on me, I might just "snap". Also, again,....it isn't the dog, it's how the dog was RAISED...the OWNER. So people need to stop blaming the dog breed, because that is ignorant and they are so wrong with their information.

Well...pitt bulls have the rep of being inbred and used in dog fights. Also...there have been many many many stories of pit bulls biting, disfiguring, and even killing people. As a nurse, I have seen a number of dog bites and every other one seems to have been inflicted by a pit bull.

Fighting Pit Bull - Dog Fighting and the American Pit Bull Terrier
excerpt from link

the American Pit Bull Terrier was (and still is) bred for dog fighting.

It's also true they were fighting animals like:

* Bears

* Boar

* Badgers

* Donkeys

* Lions

* Tigers

...long before they were fought with other Pit Bulls

I think running afoul of dogs instincts big part of it.

I am fond of dogs but I make sure I mind my p's and q's also.
Dogs will put up with things from owner and family BUT NOT from ousider.
I am not going to run up to dog and nuzzle it and scratch it behind the ears and say "good doggy".
not a dog I don't know
Alot dogs aren't putting up with that crap.

People bring dogs aboard metro busses(Seattle).....
and they don't have to be service dogs either.
I have seen some large dogs on bus.....
very recently too.

I like dogs.
But I don't reach over and pet it.
In fact I am aware of eye contact.
Don't wanna be looking that dog dead in the eyes.

People do "something" to set dog off.

I think that breeds of dogs that were bred to emphasize a particular instinct just can't help themselves sometimes.

It's BRED into them.

It's not a "misconception", you and others may have pussycat pitt bulls, but too many people don't have pussycat pitt bulls. They and rottweilers are notorious for attacking and killing other animals or small children. There are professional boarders or dog walkers that will refuse to accept either of them. Most people own these types of dogs mainly for their notoriety, or reputation.
