Hey good for you nice to see some sense for a change :)

And why do people moan about immigrants getting benefits and free accommodation when they move here. Sorry but it's just not true (unless they are asylum seekers who are a special case)
They don't qualify for state benefits unless they have earned a certain amount of National Insurance contributions in the first place, in which case they are just as entitled to benefits as us (if not more so than some chav/junkie scum on the dole)

People should stop believing everything they read in the Daily Mail.

Trouble is, very few Britons moving abroad are economic migrants who arrive in their host country in the back of lorries to evade the official customs process. The countries involved know they are there and require some sort of advance investment and locals as sponsers.

I have no problems with anyone coming here to work and give back to the country by way of taxes. But not everyone want to do that, they have heard about our wages - which are usually a lot higher than in their country; they have heard about our benefits system and get off the boat/plane expecting to be given either a job or a wheelbarrow load of benefits - remember, I didn't say everyone was like that.

Plus, we are a small island; we have very definite borders and resources. The more people who come here, the more stretched the economy will be.

I don't think people are upset over immigrants in general - just illegal ones. And they do it for a lot of reasons. First of all, just because it's illegal. It seems a bit disrespectful to go to another country and start breaking the laws immediately. Also, because if they're not documented you never know if they're someone who's up to no good. Personally, if I was a terrorist that is exactly how I would get into the country. But my personal reason to have a problem with illegal immigration is that it makes it more difficult for people who try to do it the right way. People wait years and years to gain immigrant status, then others just sneak over the border. The more people come here illegally, the more restrictions are put on legal immigrants.
As far as the language goes, I don't have a problem with not speaking English at first. However, I have met people who have been in the US for 10 years or more and just never bothered to learn it. They depend on people to translate for them instead of trying to learn. I'm a big fan of helping out someone who hasn't learned it yet, but if you don't bother after ten years you're just taking advantage of the system.

I live in Greece although I didn't move here to make money or for a better life I moved to be with my partner. I am much worse off financially and I had a much better life in the UK, materialistically. I have experienced some hostility, and I will always be classed as a foreigner. I speak a little of the language, I do my best, but it is very hard to learn. Some people have welcomed me but others will always look down on me because I am British, it's not just in the UK, it's all over the world.

Your premise is false.... people are NOT entitled to live where they want. The idea is ludicrous. Can you imagine 3 million people moving to Liechtenstein? It would be utter chaos. Controls and limits are needed. Governments have the OBLIGATION to set immigration limits that are appropriate for the good of the home country.

That being said, immigration is a good thing. It helps promote the sharing of cultures and technologies. But too much of a good thing can turn bad quickly.

The difference is that when English people move to Greece etc they are not immediately given hand-outs and free accomodation. They have to buy their own homes. If all immigrants to this country did that there would n't be so many people opposed to them.

I don't know anyone who has a problem with immigration: you're right, everyone should be welcome. The problem is with illegal, undocumented immigration. There are a bunch of people who'd like to blow up the US, cause terror and kill us. How easy would it be for them if we let everyone and anyone into the country without some way to document them? The US has the most open borders of any country in the world - why shouldn't we have more border control like everyone else? I don't think it's unreasonable to want to know who's moving into the country. If we didn't check them out we'd all be dead within months.

How can you think it's all right to let random people into a country without keeping track of anyone? And why does this stigma belong only to the US?

I'm with you - and sometimes wish the moaners would try to get to know some immigrants - but it's easier to moan about things you don't understand
